About the role
We are looking for a Commercial Route Supervisor who understands that commercial waste operations involve more than just dispatching trucks. You will lead drivers, manage routes, solve service problems, care for customers, protect valuable contracts, and run an efficient operation.

Why commercial waste experience matters
Commercial customers have different expectations than residential collection. As a Commercial Route Supervisor, you will regularly interact with customers regarding service schedules, missed pickups, overloaded containers, access issues, contract concerns, and changing service needs. You will need to resolve problems quickly, communicate professionally, and protect valuable customer relationships while representing Waste Pro. There is also a customer-retention and sales component to this role.
Responsibilities
- Directly supervise Commercial drivers and daily route operations
- Meet with drivers at the beginning and end of their routes to communicate service, safety, and equipment priorities
- Ensure required pre-trip and post-trip inspections are properly completed
- Monitor routes, productivity, yardage, tonnage, hauls, and labor utilization
- Identify underperforming routes and make routing adjustments to improve productivity and control labor costs
- Route new service starts and coordinate container delivery, service schedules, and removals
- Follow routes in the field to evaluate service quality, safety, and productivity
- Respond to customer complaints, service issues, and special service requirements
- Work directly with customers and drivers to resolve service problems before they become lost business
- Address overloaded containers, service changes, and contract concerns, involving Sales when appropriate
- Work with municipal and governmental customers to ensure timely service
- Conduct route observations and coach drivers on safety, customer service, route cleanliness, and truck appearance
- Identify driver training and performance-development needs
- Monitor driver attendance, route sheets, disposal tickets, and DOT Hours of Service compliance
- Coordinate truck repair and maintenance issues with the shop to minimize operational downtime
- Assist with accident investigations, workers' compensation matters, and property-damage reporting
- Train and orient new employees
- Conduct performance evaluations and address attendance, performance, and disciplinary issues
- Reinforce Waste Pro safety practices and assist with weekly safety meetings
- Ensure equipment and Front Load containers are maintained to Waste Pro standards
- Drive or assist with routes when necessary to cover operational shortages or support drivers who fall behind schedule
Requirements
- Waste, recycling, or commercial hauling experience is strongly preferred, particularly with Front Load and/or Roll-Off operations
- 3–5 years of experience in waste, transportation, logistics, operations, or related management; commercial waste experience is highly preferred
- Previous supervisory or management experience strongly preferred
- Demonstrated experience coaching and managing drivers or field employees
- Strong understanding of routing, productivity, and daily field operations
- Proven customer-service and problem-solving skills
- Ability to professionally manage customer complaints and protect customer relationships
- Knowledge of DOT, OSHA, ANSI, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations
- Knowledge of Smith System and/or Decision Driving principles preferred
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft applications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently, make decisions, and resolve operational problems
- Ability to maintain a positive, professional approach with employees and customers
- Valid Class A or B CDL or the ability to obtain one within three months of hire, with a driving record meeting Waste Pro and insurance requirements
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends when necessary, and respond to operational issues by phone as needed
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Knowledge of first-aid techniques is preferred

Work environment & physical requirements
This is not a desk-only supervisor position. Much of your day will be spent outside in the field working directly with drivers and monitoring commercial operations. The position requires driving a vehicle and working outdoors for most of the workday. Employees may be exposed to dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes, and other conditions normally associated with waste and recycling operations. The position may require physical effort, including handling objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
