Job Summary

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) provides direct and indirect patient care in ambulatory settings under the supervision of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, RNs, or LPNs. This role supports the delivery of safe, efficient, and age-appropriate care by assisting with exams, procedures, screenings, and documentation, while ensuring compliance with state regulations and practice policies.

As part of a collaborative, team-based model, the CMA contributes to quality improvement initiatives and helps optimize the overall patient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver age-appropriate care across the lifespan.
  • Assess patient data and identify individual needs.
  • Provide care in accordance with unit policies and procedures.
  • Schedule, escort to exam rooms, assist with transfers, specimen collection, history-taking, and screenings.
  • Support providers and nurses with procedures, charting, patient/family instructions, and communication.
  • Manage patient records and documentation.
  • Obtain lab, imaging, and referral reports.
  • Complete forms and requisitions.
  • Schedule appointments and verify insurance/demographics.
  • Maintain and update charts; review in-basket messages.
  • Prepare and clean instruments, equipment, and exam rooms per protocol.
  • Run and document equipment quality controls.
  • Maintain logs (refrigerator, samples, quality control).
  • Order, stock, and restock supplies.
  • Apply aseptic technique, sterilization, and instrument preparation.
  • Record vital signs and prep for exams.
  • Administer medications (oral, injection) and verify prescriptions.
  • Absorb minor surgeries, pre/post-surgical care, dressings, and suture removal.
  • Handle biohazard waste safely.
  • Provide therapeutic modalities and patient education (assistive devices, body mechanics, home care).
  • Perform lab procedures per OSHA standards, including CLIA-waived testing.
  • Conduct venipunctures, capillary punctures, and specimen handling (urine, throat, vaginal, stool, sputum).
  • (Venipuncture requires additional training)
  • Perform electrocardiography. (Additional training required)

Requirements

  • Education: Required: High school diploma or GED plus completion of an accredited medical assistant program OR military equivalent training. Preferred: Experience: Required: 0-2+ years CMA experience or specialty certification One year of clinical medical assistant experience within the last 5 years. Preferred: Previous MA experience Phlebotomy Skills

Qualifications

  • License/Certification/Registration Required: BLS completed prior to going to the unit/department and to be maintained going forward. Clinical Medical Assistant Certification Preferred: For Medical Assistants who work in areas with DNV Advanced Specific Disease Certification requirements: Ortho: 4 hours education annuallyStroke: 1 hours education annuallySpine: 2 hours education annually
