About the role
The Child Development Supervisor is responsible for planning and implementing a developmentally appropriate early childhood curriculum for enrolled three-to-five-year-old children. This position also supervises assigned interns, practicum students, volunteers, and individuals conducting research in the classroom.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement programs and operational procedures for preschool children focusing on a developmentally appropriate curriculum that meets Illinois licensing requirements and the standards set by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
- Plan and implement daily classroom and outdoor activities designed to promote development in all areas (cognitive, intellectual, social, emotional, and fine/large motor).
- Create lesson plans, interact with children, and document learning.
- Attend to the physical needs of the children, including supervision of dressing, feeding, napping, and toileting.
- Observe and evaluate children's developmental patterns using UIC Children's Center assessment methods and corresponding assessment tools, adjusting classroom activities accordingly.
- Maintain daily communication and partnerships with parents, developing weekly classroom-related newsletters, preparing and conducting parent/teacher conferences, sharing information related to developmental screenings and assessments, and providing additional resources or referrals when necessary.
- Participate in family events held at the UIC Children's Center.
- Work with other team members to maintain a clean, organized, and attractive classroom environment conducive to the optimal growth and development of children.
- Engage in activities leading to professional growth, including goal setting, weekly reflective practices, and in-service and pre-service professional development activities held in the community and conducted by the UIC Children's Center to meet Illinois licensing guidelines (20 clock hours/year) and NAEYC standards.
- Train, supervise, and evaluate assigned student employees, practicum students, interns, and volunteers interested in working with young children and their families.
- Collaborate with researchers by being aware of research activities scheduled for the classroom and assisting researchers to develop rapport with the children to facilitate their willing participation.
Requirements
- Possession of credentials required by Illinois Department of Children and Family Services for employment as a Child Care Worker in a licensed child care facility. Credentials can be reviewed at: http://www.ilga.gov/commission/jcar/admincode/089/089004070D01400R.html.
- A Bachelor’s degree in child development, education, or related fields, including 18 semester hours of credit for course work directly related to child development and/or child care**, of which 6 semester hours must be for the period from birth to age six OR
- Two years of experience comparable to that gained at the lower level of this series and 18 additional semester hours of credit for college course work directly related to child development and/or child care**.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of NAEYC standards and mandated state and local standards.
- Familiarity with GOLD assessment tool.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
