Chief Administrative Officer - Department of Pediatrics
About the role
The University of Maryland School of Medicine (SOM) seeks a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to lead the Department of Pediatrics and the new Golisano Children’s Hospital at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC).
Responsibilities
- Provides business administration and oversight for the School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics.
- Serves as a bridge between the SOM and the Medical Center, balancing academic priorities with clinical operations.
- Manages and plans clinical operations, including managed care contracts, and oversees administrative staff.
- Develops and implements the budget, manages and administers grants and contracts, and oversees facility space allocation.
- Maintains and promotes awareness of advances in medicine and technology, and negotiates and optimizes managed care agreements.
- Ensures clinical productivity, income, and program progress, and develops reports to monitor faculty productivity and WRVU activity.
- Oversees clinical business operations to achieve financial objectives for the clinical department.
- Designs, maintains, and implements department policies and services, and acts as liaison with Facilities Management.
- Functions as the senior authority for Human Resources and Payroll, including Benefits, Compensation, Labor and Employee Relations, and Staffing & Career Services.
- Directs and manages the authorization and transmittal of all proposals and negotiates complex agreements.
- Collaborates with upper-level management to ensure the delivery of high-quality service.
- Creates a cohesive work team that works collaboratively to achieve unit's goals.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, finance, marketing, accounting, human resources, or other related field. Master's degree preferred.
- Experience: Nine (9) years of experience in administrative and financial operations with at least three (3) years in managed care, medical practice, or a related clinical environment.
- Supervisory Experience: Five (5) years of direct supervisory or management experience.

Pay
Hiring Range: $250,000 - $300,000, commensurate with education and experience.
