Chemistry Department Instrumentation Manager

About the role

The Chemistry Department at Temple University seeks a Department Instrumentation Manager to oversee an open-access NMR laboratory with three Bruker spectrometers (two 500 MHz and one 400 MHz) equipped with sample‑changer robotics. The role includes training students, maintaining spectrometer operability, managing cryogens, and supporting other analytical instruments (HPLC, LC‑MS, FTIR) across the department.

Responsibilities

• Train students in safety and operation of NMR spectrometers
• Respond to spectrometer problems and perform minor repairs to maintain constant operability
• Support education of students requiring advanced NMR techniques; suggest appropriate experiments and provide additional training/supervision
• Assume responsibility for cryogen (liquid He, N₂) maintenance and replenishment for each magnet
• Play a leading role alongside faculty in developing support systems for other analytical instrumentation (HPLCs, LC‑Mass Spectrometers, FTIR, etc.)
• Provide user training and perform minor repairs on these additional instruments

Qualifications

• PhD in organic, inorganic, or analytical chemistry
• Extensive experience in NMR spectroscopy
• Prior experience with NMR spectrometer operation, troubleshooting, and cryogen maintenance
