About the role
The Charge Nurse, with minimal direction, supervises nursing and support staff in Labor & Delivery, a 15-bed unit responsible for both low- and high-risk moms. The unit offers medicated and unmedicated birthing options, three operating rooms, five PACU bays, an 8-bed triage unit, and an antepartum unit. Charge Nurses adhere to ANA standards of professional nursing and the ANA Code of Ethics, apply critical thinking and evidence-based policies, and utilize the Theory of Human Caring in daily practice.
Responsibilities
- Operations Management (40%): Oversee the department/unit for the assigned shift, prepare daily staffing assignments, mentor staff, evaluate performance, and facilitate patient flow, admissions, and discharges.
- Patient Assessment (20%): Assess needs of individuals, families, and/or communities to identify potential health or safety problems; provide health education, disease prevention, and after-care instruction.
- Treatment and Evaluation (20%): Consult and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care; monitor all aspects of patient care including diet and physical activity; develop and modify patient care plans; prepare patients for examinations and treatments.
- Medication Administration (10%): Administer medications, document care, and reassess patient responses.
- Monitoring (10%): Monitor, record, and report symptoms, changes in patient condition, and vital signs.
Requirements
- Associate’s Degree in Nursing (Required).
- 1–3 years of professional nursing experience in a patient-care setting.
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from AHA or American Red Cross (Required).
- Active RN license from the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) (Required).
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification from AHA (Required within 6 months).
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification (Required within 6 months of hire).
- Intermediate Fetal Monitoring certification (Required within 6 months of hire).
- Advanced Fetal Monitoring certification (Required within 1 year after obtaining Intermediate Fetal Monitoring).
Skills
- Adherence to ANA Standards of Professional Nursing Practice and accrediting-body standards.
- Strong understanding of customer-service principles as applied to patients, staff, and the community.
- Ability to promote quality patient-centric care and maintain Denver Health’s high level of patient satisfaction.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-matrix environment and communicate clearly across all levels and disciplines.
- Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary staff, charge nurses, educators, managers, providers, and leadership.
- Understanding of assessment findings as they relate to disease processes and the continuum of care.
- Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) and basic Office Suite skills.
Pay
$39.60 – $63.54 per hour.
Schedule
Nights; Regular (0.9 FTE).
