About the role
Licensed Optician/Optical Technicians prepare and dispense lenses, spectacles, eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other optical devices. They are certified to duplicate lenses accurately as to power, without prescription. A board-certified optician may fill, fit, adapt, or dispense any soft contact lens prescription and may also fill, fit, or dispense extended wear or hard contact lens prescriptions as authorized by the prescribing physician or optometrist.
Responsibilities
- Interpret prescriptions written by ophthalmologists and optometrists.
- Collect eye measurements (pupillary distance, seg height, base curve, width, and thickness).
- Help clients select the best lens and treatment options based on their needs.
- Make proper lens material choices.
- Assist clients in selecting the most appropriate frame for their facial structure and prescription.
- Troubleshoot concerns about patients’ vision and eyewear.
- Neutralize and inspect prescription lenses for accuracy using a lensometer.
- Identify wanted and unwanted prism as indicated by the written prescription.
- Navigate insurance websites to assist patients with available benefits and associated costs.
- Prepare orders for lab technicians to ensure proper lens delivery.
- Adjust eyeglasses to ensure a proper fit.
- Repair broken frames.
- Educate clients on proper eyeglass and contact lens care.
- Maintain records of orders, prescriptions, and inventory.
- Adhere to applicable laws, regulations, and contractual obligations.
Requirements
- Associate degree in Opticianry from an accredited educational institution or completion of a three-year Florida apprenticeship program.
- Licensure in the State of Florida.
- Valid Florida driver’s license with a history of safe driving.
- Alternatively, practiced Opticianry and licensed in a state outside of Florida.
- ABO/NCLE certification (preferred).
- Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, instruments, and equipment used in opticianry.
- Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
- Ability to multi-task, work in a fast-paced environment, and manage time effectively.
- Knowledge of progressive and other lens options, including differences between them.
- Knowledge of nonglare, polarized, and other lens treatments.
- Knowledge of material options and their differences.
- Proficiency in using a computer.
Physical Demands
- Excessive walking, standing, bending, and stooping.
- Frequent standing, sitting, handling objects, reaching with hands and arms, talking, and hearing.
- Occasional climbing, balancing, kneeling, and crouching.
- Ability to lift moderately heavy objects (50-90 pounds).
- Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Schedule
This is a full-time position. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. (occasional 6:00 P.M. in specific locations), with occasional overtime. Saturdays 8:00 A.M. – 12:00 P.M. in specific locations. Travel and driving are required for some locations.
