Certified Medical Assistant, Family Medicine

About the role
This position provides services in the Ambulatory Care Department under the supervision of a Licensed Independent Practitioner (e.g., physician, dentist, or nurse practitioner). The Certified Medical Assistant performs a broad range of administrative and clinical duties to facilitate the work of the Licensed Independent Practitioner, including gathering vital signs, preparing and sending laboratory specimens, maintaining examination rooms, and recording patient data.
Responsibilities
- Assists with direct patient care procedures, including checking patients in, obtaining patient histories, taking vital signs, preparing records, and assisting with medical examinations.
- Records patient information (e.g., vital signs, height, weight) into the electronic health record as assigned per policy.
- Provides basic care to patients under the direction of a Licensed Independent Practitioner, including applying and removing dressings, assisting with ambulation, transferring, and positioning.
- Assists the Licensed Independent Practitioner in patient examinations by explaining procedures, positioning, draping, and assembling instruments and supplies.
- Performs procedures after approved training and competency completion, including:
- Waived testing (e.g., glucometer testing, rapid strep testing, colorimetric urinalysis) and recording results in compliance with regulations.
- Obtaining bacteriologic specimens (e.g., clean-catch urine specimens, topical cultures).
- Assisting with incision and drainage procedures.
- Performing less complex dressings and treatments without assistance.
- Administering injections (IM, SQ, ID) as directed by the Licensed Independent Practitioner.
- Instructs patients in proper collection of urine samples and prepares samples for analysis.
- Routes requisition forms to consultative services, dietary, laboratory, and radiology.
- Observes and reports patient conditions and reactions, keeping the provider informed of changes.
- Schedules and monitors patient appointments; coordinates routine office activities and administrative functions.
- Maintains clinical records and utilizes software for data entry (e.g., immunizations, laboratory follow-ups).
- Educates and advises patients on specified medical issues within established parameters.
- Practices safety, environmental, and infection control methods.
- Maintains a courteous and professional manner in all patient, family, and client interactions.
- Performs general non-direct patient care duties, including cleaning, restocking supplies, and maintaining a safe patient environment.
- Participates in performance improvement activities and data management responsibilities.
- Floats to other clinics during staffing shortages to meet patient care needs.
- Ensures proper PPE is worn at all times and completes donning/doffing tasks safely.
- Completes electronic health record entries accurately and timely.
- Participates in departmental workflow and testing teams related to electronic health records or other initiatives.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Certified Medical Assistant from one of the following accrediting bodies: American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), or National Health Center Association (NHA).
- Completion of an approved medical assistance training program accredited by CAAHEP, ABHES, or a program meeting entry-level competencies under R4-16-402(A).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Demonstrated satisfactory performance during clinical experiences as part of an accredited program.
