Rowan Medicine, an affiliate of Virtua Medical Group, is seeking a certified medical assistant to join their growing team in Sewell, NJ. This position supports physicians in an outpatient setting through clinical, clerical, and reception duties.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares exam rooms and sterilizes medical instruments and equipment.
  • Prepares patients for visits:
    • Escorts patients to exam rooms
    • Records patient history and chief complaint
    • Takes vitals (height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse)
  • Performs diagnostic tests per physicians’ standing orders (EKG, blood work, vision and hearing screening, urine dip, PFTs).
  • Administers vaccines and intramuscular/subcutaneous injections as directed by a physician and permitted under State Regulations.
  • Notifies supervisor to order clinical supplies, including injectables and vaccines.
  • Assists physicians and nurses during examinations and procedures.
  • Collects and prepares laboratory specimens for analysis.
  • Assists with minor surgical procedures and wound care.
  • Ensures outside testing results are in the patient chart for physician review.
  • Documents clinical information in the EMR system.
  • Provides clinical care in accordance with training and under supervision:
    • Laboratory tests
    • Vision screening
    • Audiograms
    • ECGs
    • Phlebotomy and specimen processing
    • Allergy screening
  • Maintains and cleans office medical equipment.
  • Schedules patient appointments and manages patient flow.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date patient medical records.
  • Answers phone calls and addresses patient inquiries.
  • Handles billing and coding for insurance purposes.
  • Verifies demographics and insurance information; updates billing system.
  • Verifies patient insurance through insurance lists or websites.
  • Collects co-pays from patients.
  • Completes batches and prepares deposits for pickup.
  • Retrieves and enters referrals into the billing system.
  • Ensures cleanliness and organization of exam rooms and clinic areas.
  • Maintains inventory of front office supplies.
  • Coordinates patient care services at other facilities (surgeries, preadmission testing).
  • Requests pre-authorizations and pre-certifications as required by insurers.
  • Handles prescription requests, including calling in prescriptions at the physician’s direction.
  • Manages incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Prepares patient charts for the next day.
  • Opens and closes offices; activates/deactivates security system as assigned.
  • Treats others with compassion, dignity, and respect.
  • Maintains a customer-focused approach.
  • Attends mandatory in-service trainings.
  • Maintains competence in office computer systems.
  • Adheres to University HIPAA and confidentiality policies.
  • Assists with orientation and training of new employees as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Certification from a recognized certifying body (e.g., AAMA, AMT, NHA, NCCT).
  • Licensed in New Jersey to administer intramuscular and subcutaneous injections (or eligible under State Regulations).
  • Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
  • Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Compassionate and patient-focused attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year of experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting.
  • For pediatric settings: knowledge of pediatric vaccines, vaccine schedules, and pediatric vaccine administration; pediatric triage experience.
  • Familiarity with EPIC EHR system.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move medical equipment and supplies.
  • Manual dexterity to handle instruments and perform medical procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively under stressful circumstances.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a clinical environment.
  • Exposure to infectious diseases and bodily fluids.
  • May require evening, weekend, or holiday shifts depending on clinic hours.
  • Occasional travel to other offices within the department; travel time is compensated, and mileage is reimbursed per company policy.

Pay

Starting rate: $21.92 per hour (probationary rate). After a six-month probationary period, pay increases to $22.57 per hour. Depending on experience, candidates may be hired at the job rate of $22.57 to start.
