Rowan Medicine, an affiliate of Virtua Medical Group, is seeking a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) to support the OBGYN department in Washington Township, NJ. This role reports to the Practice Supervisor and performs medical, clerical, and reception duties in an outpatient setting.

Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Prepares exam room and sterilizes medical instruments and equipment for tests and procedures.
  • Prepares patients for visits, including:
    • Escorting patients to exam rooms
    • Taking patient history and chief complaint
    • Recording vitals (height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, and pulse)
  • Performs diagnostic tests per physicians’ standing orders, such as EKG, blood work, vision and hearing screening, urine dip, and pulmonary function tests (PFTs).
  • Administers vaccines and intramuscular/subcutaneous injections as directed by the physician and permitted under State Regulations.
  • Notifies supervisor to order clinical supplies, including injectables and vaccines.
  • Assists physicians and nurses during examinations and procedures.
  • Collects and prepares laboratory specimens for analysis.
  • Assists with minor surgical procedures and wound care.
  • Ensures outside testing results are in the patient chart for physician review.
  • Documents clinical information in the EMR system.
  • Provides clinical care under supervisor’s direction, including:
    • Laboratory tests
    • Vision screening and audiograms
    • ECGs
    • Phlebotomy and specimen processing
    • Allergy screening
  • Maintains and cleans office medical equipment as required.

Administrative Duties

  • Schedules patient appointments and manages patient flow.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date patient medical records.
  • Answers phone calls and addresses patient inquiries professionally.
  • Handles billing and coding for insurance purposes.
  • Verifies patient demographics and insurance information, updating the billing system as needed.
  • Verifies patient insurance through insurance lists or websites.
  • Collects appropriate co-pays from patients.
  • Completes batches as scheduled and prepares deposits for pickup.
  • Retrieves referrals for visits and enters them into the billing system.
  • Ensures cleanliness and organization of exam rooms and clinic areas.
  • Maintains inventory of front office supplies and notifies supervisor when reordering is needed.
  • Signs in and out to the answering service daily as directed.
  • Arranges patient care services at other facilities, including surgeries and preadmission testing.
  • Requests pre-authorizations and pre-certifications as required by the patient’s insurer.
  • Coordinates prescription requests, provides charts to physicians, telephones prescriptions as directed, and documents in the patient chart.
  • Handles incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Pulls patient charts for the next day and prepares them.
  • Opens and closes offices as assigned, including activating/deactivating the security system.
  • Maintains a professional and orderly office appearance.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Certification from a recognized certifying body (e.g., AAMA, AMT, NHA, NCCT).
  • Licensed in the State of New Jersey to administer intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, if applicable.
  • Satisfactory level of comprehension and experience in administering intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
  • Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
  • Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Compassionate and patient-focused attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year of previous experience working as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting.
  • For Pediatrics: knowledge of pediatric vaccines, vaccine schedules, pediatric vaccine administration, and pediatric triage.
  • Familiarity with EPIC EHR system.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move medical equipment and supplies.
  • Manual dexterity to handle instruments and perform medical procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers, sometimes under stressful circumstances.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a clinical environment.
  • Exposure to infectious diseases and bodily fluids.
  • May require evening, weekend, or holiday shifts depending on clinic hours.
  • May require occasional travel to another office within the department; travel time is compensated, and mileage is reimbursed per company policy.

Pay

The starting rate is $21.92 per hour (Probationary Rate). After completion of a six-month probationary period, the pay increases to $22.57 per hour (Job Rate). Depending on experience, candidates may be hired at the Job Rate to start.
