Rowan Medicine, an affiliate of Virtua Medical Group, is seeking a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) to support physicians in an outpatient family medicine setting in Stratford, NJ.
Responsibilities
- Prepares exam room and sterilizes medical instruments and equipment for tests and procedures.
- Prepares patients for visits:
- Escorts patient to exam room
- Takes history and chief complaint
- Records vitals including height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, and pulse
- Performs diagnostic tests per physicians’ standing orders such as EKG, blood work, vision and hearing screening, urine dip, and pulmonary function tests (PFT’s).
- As directed by physician, prepares and/or administers vaccines and intramuscular and subcutaneous injections in limited circumstances, which may be delegated under State Regulations.
- Notifies supervisor to order clinical supplies including injectables and vaccines, as needed.
- Assists physicians and nurses during examinations and procedures.
- Collects and prepares laboratory specimens for analysis.
- Assists with minor surgical procedures and wound care.
- Ensures patient’s outside testing results are in the chart for physician review with patient.
- Documents clinical information in chart or EMR system.
- Provides clinical care in accordance with training and under supervisor’s direction:
- Laboratory tests
- Vision screening
- Audiograms
- ECGs
- Phlebotomy and processing of specimens
- Allergy screening
- Maintains and cleans office medical equipment as required.
- Schedules patient appointments and manages patient flow.
- Maintains accurate and up-to-date patient medical records.
- Answers phone calls and addresses patient inquiries with a pleasant and helpful demeanor.
- Handles billing and coding for insurance purposes.
- Verifies demographics and insurance information and updates in billing system.
- Verifies patient’s insurance through insurance lists and/or via insurance websites.
- Collects appropriate co-pays from patients.
- Completes batches as scheduled and prepares the deposit for pickup.
- Retrieves referrals for appropriate visits and enters into billing system.
- Ensures the cleanliness and organization of the exam rooms and clinic areas.
- Maintains inventory of front office supplies and notifies supervisor when supplies need to be ordered.
- Signs in and out to the answering service daily as directed.
- Arranges for patient care services at other facilities, including surgeries, preadmission testing, etc.
- Calls for pre-authorizations and pre-certifications as required by the patient’s insurer.
- Coordinates requests for prescriptions from patients, provides chart to physician, telephones prescriptions at the direction of the physicians, and makes notation in the patient chart with date and signature.
- Handles incoming and outgoing mail.
- Pulls patient charts for next day and prepares chart.
- Opens and closes offices as assigned by supervisor.
- Activates and deactivates security system as assigned by supervisor.
- Maintains a professional and orderly office appearance.
- Treats others with compassion, dignity, and respect.

- Attends all mandatory in-service and trainings as directed.
- Maintains competence in all applicable office computer systems.
- Supports and adheres to the University policies regarding HIPAA and confidentiality.
- Assists with the orientation and training of new employees as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
- Certification from a recognized certifying body (e.g., AAMA, AMT, NHA, NCCT).
- Applicants may be licensed in the State of New Jersey in another classification permitted by regulations to give intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
- Must have attained a satisfactory level of comprehension and experience in the administration of intramuscular and subcutaneous injection techniques.
- Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques required.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
- Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) systems.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Compassionate and patient-focused attitude.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least one year of previous experience working as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting.
- If in Pediatrics: knowledge of pediatric vaccines, knowledge of the vaccine schedule, experience in pediatric administration of vaccines, and pediatric triage preferred.
- Familiarity with EPIC.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and move medical equipment and supplies.
- Manual dexterity to handle instruments and perform medical procedures.
- Must be able to communicate well with internal and external customers, sometimes under stressful circumstances.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in a clinical environment.
- Exposure to infectious diseases and bodily fluids.
- May require evening, weekend, or holiday shifts depending on the clinic's hours of operation.
- May require occasional travel to another office within the department due to operational needs. Travel time will be compensated, and mileage reimbursed per company policy.
Pay
The starting rate is $21.18 per hour (Probationary Rate). After completion of a six-month probationary period, the employee's pay will increase to the Job Rate of $21.81. Depending on experience, candidate may be hired at the "Job Rate" to start.
