About the role

The Lead Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) at Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) is responsible for administering care management, coordinating activities for patients, providing direct patient care, assisting providers with procedures, and performing administrative duties.

Responsibilities

• Prepares exam room and sterilizes medical instruments and equipment for tests and procedures.
• Takes patient histories, chief complaints, vitals, and performs diagnostic tests as per physicians' standing orders.
• Administers vaccines and intramuscular/subcutaneous injections under state regulations.
• Assists physicians and nurses during examinations and procedures.
• Collects and prepares laboratory specimens for analysis, assists with minor surgical procedures, and ensures wound care.
• Documents clinical information in the chart or EMR system.
• Provides clinical care under supervisor's direction, including laboratory tests, vision screenings, ECGs, phlebotomy, and allergy screening.
• Serves as an on-site trainer for CMA staff members and a backup for the Practice Supervisor.
• Manages patient flow, maintains patient medical records, handles billing and coding, verifies insurance information, collects co-pays, and coordinates patient care services.
• Maintains exam rooms and clinic areas, manages inventory, and activates/deactivates security systems.
• Answers phone calls, addresses patient inquiries, and handles incoming and outgoing mail.
• Opens and closes offices as assigned, pulls patient charts, and completes batches for pickup.
• Activates and deactivates security systems as assigned by supervisor.
• Maintains a professional and orderly office appearance.

• Supports and adheres to University policies regarding HIPAA and confidentiality.
• Assists with the orientation and training of new employees as requested.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
• Certification from a recognized certifying body (e.g., AAMA, AMT, NHA, NCCT).
• Licensed in the State of New Jersey in another classification permitted by regulations to give intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Strong knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
• Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) systems.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
• Compassionate and patient-focused attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

• At least two years of previous experience working as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting.
• Pediatric experience and knowledge of pediatric vaccine administration and the vaccine schedule preferred.
• Familiarity with EPIC.
