Rowan Medicine, an affiliate of Virtua Medical Group, is seeking a certified medical assistant to join their growing team in Sewell, NJ. This role supports physicians in an outpatient setting through clinical, clerical, and reception duties.

Responsibilities

  • Clinical Duties:
    • Prepare exam rooms and sterilize medical instruments and equipment.
    • Prepare patients for visits:
      • Escort patients to exam rooms.
      • Record patient history and chief complaint.
      • Take vitals: height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, and pulse.
    • Perform diagnostic tests per physicians’ standing orders (EKG, blood work, vision and hearing screening, urine dip, PFTs).
    • Administer vaccines and intramuscular/subcutaneous injections as directed by a physician and permitted under State Regulations.
    • Notify supervisor to order clinical supplies, including injectables and vaccines.
    • Assist physicians and nurses during examinations and procedures.
    • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens for analysis.
    • Assist with minor surgical procedures and wound care.
    • Ensure outside testing results are in the patient chart for physician review.
    • Document clinical information in the EMR system.
    • Provide clinical care under supervisor’s direction:
      • Laboratory tests
      • Vision screening
      • Audiograms
      • ECGs
      • Phlebotomy and specimen processing
      • Allergy screening
    • Maintain and clean office medical equipment.
  • Administrative Duties:
    • Schedule patient appointments and manage patient flow.
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient medical records.
    • Answer phone calls and address patient inquiries.
    • Handle billing and coding for insurance purposes.
    • Verify demographics and insurance information; update billing system.
    • Verify patient insurance through insurance lists or websites.
    • Collect co-pays from patients.
    • Complete batches and prepare deposits for pickup.
    • Retrieve and enter referrals into the billing system.
    • Ensure cleanliness and organization of exam rooms and clinic areas.
    • Maintain inventory of front office supplies; notify supervisor when reordering is needed.
    • Sign in/out to the answering service daily as directed.
    • Arrange patient care services at other facilities (e.g., surgeries, preadmission testing).
    • Obtain pre-authorizations and pre-certifications as required by insurers.
    • Coordinate prescription requests; telephone prescriptions at the physician’s direction and document in patient charts.
    • Handle incoming and outgoing mail.
    • Prepare patient charts for the next day.
    • Open and close offices as assigned; activate/deactivate security system.
    • Maintain a professional and orderly office appearance.
  • Other Duties:
    • Treat others with compassion, dignity, and respect.
    • Maintain a customer-focused approach.
    • Attend mandatory in-service trainings.
    • Maintain competence in office computer systems.
    • Adhere to University policies regarding HIPAA and confidentiality.
    • Assist with orientation and training of new employees.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Certification from a recognized certifying body (e.g., AAMA, AMT, NHA, NCCT).
  • Licensed in New Jersey to administer intramuscular and subcutaneous injections (or eligible under State Regulations).
  • Satisfactory experience in administering intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
  • Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology and procedures.
  • Proficiency in using electronic health records (EHR) systems.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Compassionate and patient-focused attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year of experience as a Medical Assistant in a clinical setting.
  • For pediatric roles: knowledge of pediatric vaccines, vaccine schedules, pediatric vaccine administration, and pediatric triage.
  • Familiarity with EPIC EHR system.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and move medical equipment and supplies.
  • Manual dexterity to handle instruments and perform medical procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively under stressful circumstances.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a clinical environment.
  • Exposure to infectious diseases and bodily fluids.
  • May require evening, weekend, or holiday shifts depending on clinic hours.
  • Occasional travel to other offices within the department; travel time is compensated, and mileage is reimbursed per company policy.

Pay

Starting rate: $21.92 per hour (probationary rate). After a six-month probationary period, pay increases to $22.57 per hour. Candidates with relevant experience may be hired at the job rate of $22.57 per hour to start.
