Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) - Hematology Oncology - Stephenson Cancer Center

About the role

This position may be filled as a Certified Medical Assistant Level 1 or 2, depending on individual experience, expertise, and qualifications. Special Benefits Sign-on bonus up to $2,000 for qualified individuals.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct patient care by taking vitals, patient history, venipuncture, lab, x-ray, referrals, and patient phone messages as directed by the provider and/or clinical supervisor
• Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate based on the level of patient contact this position requires
• Contributes to the assessment/re-assessment of patients
• Maintains patient status and organizes workflow to meet patient needs in a timely manner
• Retrieves and transports medications, instruments and supplies
• Maintains sterile field and specimen labeling when necessary
• Gathers and documents information about patient condition, including lab values, pain levels, patient education needs, nutritional status and potential complications
• Performs cleaning, sterilization and/or high-level disinfection of scopes, probe, instruments and equipment according to manufacturer instructions for use
• Participates in the development of the plan of care, including implementation and evaluation of appropriate patient care interventions which may include oral, intramuscular, intradermal, and subcutaneous medication administration (exclusive of narcotics) as directed by a physician or physician assistant
• Reinforces patient education about medications, post-surgical care, special diets, and changes in treatment plans
• Transmits prescription refills as directed
• Arranges for hospital admissions and patient care services
• Precepts new medical assistants
• Participates in daily compliance audits, chart checks, and reporting safety events
• De-escalates patient concerns

Requirements

• Certified Medical Assistant I: Education - High School Diploma or GED required. Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program preferred. Experience - 0-3 years of experience in Patient Care as a Medical Assistant or similar patient care role preferred. License/Certification/Registration - Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire. One of the following certifications are required upon hire: Medical Assistant - American Medical Technologists (AMT), Registered Medical Assistant - American Association of Medical Personnel, Registered Medical Assistant - American Allied Health, Certified Medical Assistant - American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant - National HealthCareer Association, National Certified Medical Assistant - National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant - National Association for Health Professionals
• Certified Medical Assistant II: Education - High School Diploma or GED required. Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program preferred. Experience - 3-5 years of experience in Patient Care as a Medical Assistant or similar patient care role required. License/Certification/Registration - Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification required upon hire.
