Responsibilities

• Plans, schedules, and organizes patient care in an oncology clinic.
• Assists nurses and physicians with procedures.
• Performs general office duties and serves as a Certified Medical Assistant for a specialty clinic.
• Displays a professional manner and image; demonstrates initiative and responsibility.
• Works as a member of the healthcare team, prioritizing and performing multiple tasks.
• Treats all patients with compassion and empathy, adapting communications to individual needs.
• Uses professional telephone techniques and adheres to institutional attendance policies.
• Prepares and maintains medical records, examination, and treatment areas.
• Performs inventory of supplies and equipment.
• Independently schedules appointments and files daily medical charts.
• Accurately dictates telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy.
• Coordinates patients' referrals and follow-up visits per physicians' instructions.
• Assists physicians with obtaining further needed patient records and identifies potential changes/needs in the physician’s schedule.
• Applies principles of aseptic technique and infection control.
• Collects and processes specimens, obtains patient history and vital signs.
• Sets up and cleans patient rooms; prepares patients for examination, procedures, and treatments.
• Coordinates patient care information with other healthcare providers and documents according to policy.
• Contributes to the development and maintenance of a current, individualized, goal-oriented plan of care.
• Observes, assesses, documents, and reports patient responses to treatments/therapies and teaching.
• Collects, documents, and reports data regarding patient biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational, and discharge planning needs.
• Participates in unit, service, and/or department enrichment activities, including committees, CQI activities, and orientation/education of personnel.
• Provides treatments/therapies such as respiratory treatments, suctioning, tracheostomy care, medication administration, cardiac monitoring, and intravenous infusion monitoring.
• Assists physicians with special procedures, performs point-of-care testing, routine laboratory work, catheter care, and specialized sterile dressings.
• Provides patient/caregiver teaching based on the established plan.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Verbally de-escalates frightened or potentially aggressive patients and facilitates age-appropriate coping strategies.
• Maintains a safe environment for patients, self, and others.
• Enters data into the electronic medical record (EMR), ensuring accuracy and completeness.
• Gathers and documents clinical information from current or historical records under provider direction.
• Performs duties to improve provider efficiency, such as assisting with medication reconciliation, documenting procedures, and providing communication assistance.
• Completes annual HIPAA, patient confidentiality, and scribe training requirements; signs a confidentiality agreement.

Requirements

• High school graduate or GED.
• Completion of an accredited medical assistant program.
• Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification.
• NC CMA License.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• 2 years of experience in healthcare as a Certified Medical Technician (CMT) (preferred).
