Employment status: Regular Full-Time, Hourly, Non-Exempt – 40 hours per week. Reports to: Director of Nursing.

Our staff is anchored by a multicultural primary care team that serves alongside roughly 300 volunteer interpreters, doctors, nurses, and other licensed medical specialists each year to provide comprehensive health care to Nashville’s most vulnerable.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the larger clinic team to provide patient care through intake, onsite diagnostics and treatments, patient education, and occasional home visits in the context of whole-person care with a team model.
  • May provide nursing support directly for one specific provider or rotate among all the providers.
  • Retrieve messages from the nurse voicemail when needed, sending messages to the appropriate physician and/or their nurse.
  • Perform in-office procedures as needed: HbA1c, blood glucose, strep screen, U/A, pregnancy test, EKGs, audiometry, and spirometry.
  • Provide PO, IM, and nebulized medications as needed.
  • After training, may administer VFC vaccines.
  • Provide training and resource support for volunteer nurses.
  • Perform phlebotomy for in-office laboratory when needed.
  • Collaborate with other team members by making phone calls on behalf of the provider to the patient, pharmacy, or another physician’s office.
  • Provide patient education as directed by the provider.
  • Provide patient follow-up through phone calls and occasional home visits.
  • Deliver care in a manner that preserves patient autonomy, dignity, and rights.
  • Participate in on-going quality improvement (QI) activities within defined roles.
  • Answer incoming calls from patients, pharmacies, and other healthcare providers using established clinical protocols.
  • Relay test results as directed by a provider and answer questions within defined MA scope of practice.
  • Escalate complex medical questions, red flag symptoms, or concerns requiring clinical assessment to the Triage RN immediately per protocol.
  • Document all patient phone encounters accurately per clinical protocols.
  • Function under the direct supervision of the Triage RN when serving in a phone MA role.
  • Provide health education to community health workers within the Community Health program if designated.
  • Perform quality control measures on equipment if assigned.
  • Perform OSHA requirements for sharps containers, biohazard bags, and expired medications.
  • Perform sterilization of surgical instruments with autoclave protocol if needed.
  • Complete Health Department Reporting for Communicable Diseases.

Requirements

  • Current National Medical Assistant Certification required.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Diploma or Associate Degree from a Medical Assisting Program.
  • Passionate about Christian ministry to the underserved and in full agreement with Siloam’s mission and core values.
  • Willingness to serve persons with limited access to healthcare and who are from different cultures and faith beliefs.
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with MS Office products as well as electronic medical records preferred.
  • Outpatient experience is preferred.
  • Adherence to OSHA and confidentiality requirements.
  • Ability to work well in a team setting.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology is preferred.
  • Bilingual preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and reaching.
  • Must be able to lift and/or assist patients (with or without reasonable accommodation).
  • Must be able to perform repetitive movements associated with clinical care.

Special Conditions of Employment

  • Annual TB screenings.
  • Proof of previous Hepatitis B vaccination, although employee may decline vaccination by signing a declination form.
