Certified Medical Assistant
About the Role
The Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA) provides clinical support services to the physician, including preparation of clients for appointments, basic laboratory testing, ECG, updraft treatments, measurement of vital signs, assisting with procedures, administering medications and immunizations. This position requires proficiency in electronic medical records and a basic knowledge of front office procedures such as scheduling appointments. The CMA may also work in other areas of the clinic, such as the Call Center or other departments as needed.
The CMA should have knowledge of medical terminology, clinical protocols, patient evaluation and triage methods, medication administration, patient charting, medical equipment operation, and applicable OSHA, federal, and state regulations.
Responsibilities
- Receive and prepare patients for provider appointments, including obtaining and recording vital signs and chief complaints.
- Immediately notify the provider of abnormal vital signs (e.g., blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, difficulty breathing, bleeding, or decreased consciousness).
- Communicate provider instructions to patients, serve as a patient advocate, and relay health concerns to the provider.
- Contact patients regarding abnormal laboratory or diagnostic results, schedule or reschedule appointments per provider instructions, and return patient calls in a timely manner.
- Perform laboratory and diagnostic tests according to departmental protocols, including blood glucose testing, urinalysis, rapid strep testing, fecal occult blood testing, urine pregnancy tests, phlebotomy, ECG, updraft treatments, oximetry, and oxygen administration.
- Instruct patients in specimen collection (e.g., clean catch urinalysis, sputum samples).
- Maintain equipment and supplies for patient care, ensuring exam rooms are appropriately stocked and set up for providers.
- Document all patient interactions in the electronic medical record, including vital signs, chief complaints, telephone interactions, prescription refills, and other pertinent information.
- Perform other related duties as assigned, including prioritizing workload, participating in training, and following established guidelines.
Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant Program.
- Certification with the National Association of Health Professionals within 60 days of completing clinical externship.
- Proven work history with hands-on, full-charge nursing responsibility and demonstrated competency in nursing protocols and procedures.
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to observe, interview, and triage patient symptoms.
- Proficiency in maintaining quality, safety, and infection control standards.
- Ability to safely operate medical equipment, prepare and process laboratory samples, and schedule appointments.
- Team-oriented with the ability to work cooperatively in a diverse environment.
- Ability to sterilize supplies and equipment, and maintain/restock examination and procedure rooms.
Physical Demands
- Frequent sitting or standing for long periods, handling papers, typing, and operating computer equipment.
- Regular reaching with hands and arms, talking, seeing, and hearing.
- Close vision and ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to assist patients, including lifting when necessary.
- Work is performed in a medical clinic environment, with occasional travel to other sites by automobile.
Pay
The starting wage for this position is $20.00 per hour.
This position requires successful completion of substance abuse testing as a condition of employment.
