Certified Medical Assistant
About the role
A certified medical assistant is needed to assist in maintaining clinic flow. Duties include greeting patients, registering them, directing them to the correct appointment areas, recording chief complaints, taking vital signs, performing routine tests and procedures, preparing equipment and supplies, cleaning examination rooms, verifying insurance coverage, collecting payments from patients, assisting health care providers during examinations, treatments, and minor surgeries, scheduling appointments, updating and filing medical records, ordering and scheduling lab tests, retrieving and distributing results, typing materials, completing and verifying forms, maintaining general filing systems, monitoring supply inventory, and ensuring compliance with health care regulations.
Responsibilities
- Greet patients to determine needs; register and direct patients to the correct appointment areas.
- Record chief complaint, take vital signs and health information, and perform routine tests and procedures including venipuncture, blood pressures, pulse rates, respirations, weights, and heights.
- Prepare equipment/supplies and clean examination rooms to prepare for patient examinations.
- Verify insurance coverage and authorizations and collect payments from patients.
- Assist health care providers during examinations, treatments, and minor surgery.
- Schedule appointments, maintain master schedule for physicians, provide information, receive and route calls, and relay messages.
- Order, update, copy, and file patients' charts/medical records to ensure availability for health care providers.
- Order and schedule lab tests, retrieve and distribute results to health care providers, laboratories, and medical records as directed.
- Type materials, complete and verify forms, and maintain general filing system and petty cash/change fund.
- Maintain supply inventory and order per guidelines.
- Ensure compliance with all health care regulations, including HIPAA and OSHA.
Requirements
- Knowledge normally acquired through a high school education.
- Six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in a medical office, medical clinic, or mental health office performing routine health assessment tests; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Pediatric practice experience preferred.
- Current certification or certification required within 90 days of hire.
- AthenaNet or other EMR experience preferred.
- Experience using word processing and database software may be required.
- Completion of specified medical courses such as Nurse Health Aid and Phlebotomy preferred.
- Medical Billing and Medical Terminology experience preferred.
Qualifications
