About the role
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) seeks a Construction Inspector to lead inspections of construction activity for Class 1 structures, ensuring compliance with relevant codes, laws, and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Determine compliance with appropriate codes, laws, rules, and regulations during field inspections of construction activity for Class 1 structures.
- Issue inspection reports and violations regarding fire and building codes, standards, laws, rules, and regulations.
- Perform damage assessment inspections following natural or man-made disasters to assess affected buildings for safe entry.
- Issue appropriate inspection orders for code deficiencies, collaborating with local enforcement authorities.
- Issue fire watches and prepare orders for building closures if necessary.
- Enter detailed inspection results and code interpretations into an established database management system.
- Provide education and training on fire and building codes to architects, engineers, local officials, contractors, property owners, and other staff members.
- Prepare correspondence and technical reports explaining fire and building code revisions, policies, and answer general code inquiries.
- Investigate and resolve complaints or refer them to the appropriate level.
- Stay updated on changes in codes, standards, laws, rules, regulations, and procedures.
- Train local fire and building officials through classes and field instruction.
- Train new inspection staff on code-related topics, providing specific on-the-job training.
Requirements
- Must possess an International Code Council (ICC) certification as a Commercial Building Inspector and Commercial Fire Inspector.
- Working knowledge of database systems and MS Office applications.
- Extensive knowledge of construction and fire principles, practices, and procedures.
- Extensive ability to interpret construction drawings and specifications; possess knowledge of applicable building codes.
- Extensive ability to interpret the State’s fire and building codes, standards, laws, rules, and regulations and apply them to inspection practices.
- Effective communication skills to both internal and external customers.
- Valid Indiana Driver's license and ability to operate a State vehicle.
- At least two (2) years of experience as a code official and/or four (4) years for the Indiana Department of Homeland Security experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered.
