About the role

The Building Safety Department in New Hanover County seeks experienced Code Compliance Officials to ensure compliance with commercial and residential codes. These officials guide citizens in adhering to building standards and inspect construction projects.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections to verify compliance with codes and ordinances.
  • Review blueprints and schematics to ensure adherence to building standards.
  • Interpret and communicate relevant construction ordinances and codes to owners, contractors, and design professionals.
  • Communicate with the public to address questions and concerns related to code issues.
  • Complete electronic reports of inspections and investigate reports of non-compliance.
  • Assist in damage assessments following natural disasters.

Requirements

  • Pre-qualified by the NC Office of State Fire Marshal or hold NC certifications in Building, Electrical, Mechanical, or Plumbing.
  • Computer-literate and proficient in using iPads and iPhones for remote inspections and communications.
  • Self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a telework environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Level II certification in at least one trade area (Building, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing).
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License with a good driving record.
  • Appropriate workspace for teleworking.

Skills

  • Knowledge of North Carolina technical codes.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Solid proficiency in modern office technology.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills.

Schedule
