About the role

The Cemetery Administration Specialist represents the National Cemetery Administration (NCA) at committal services and outreach events, ensuring compliance with NCA standards to honor Veterans and their families. This role involves providing information about memorial benefits to Veterans and eligible family members, performing administrative duties, and acting as a clearing point for eligibility and procedural inquiries.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor committal services for compliance with NCA standards and represent the cemetery at these services and outreach events.
  • Provide information to Veterans and eligible family members regarding memorial benefits.
  • Perform administrative duties in support of cemetery operations, including planning and coordination with the Administrative Officer and/or Cemetery Administrator.
  • Investigate and determine eligibility for interment activities, including resolving discrepancies in service records, family relationships, and legal eligibility for burial.
  • Perform clerical and office automation tasks using software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams to generate reports and ensure timely completion of required documentation.
  • Act as a clearing point for issues, including Congressional inquiries, eligibility determinations, and conflicts regarding burial rights (e.g., remarried spouses, family burial requests).
  • Conduct public outreach as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Schedule

  • Required to work Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
  • Staff may be required to work on Federal holidays that fall on a Monday or Friday, as well as Memorial Day and Veterans Day each year.
  • Overtime, weekends, and holidays may be required to meet cemetery needs, including emergency call-backs.
  • Compressed/flexible schedules and telework are not available.
  • This is not a remote or virtual position.

Requirements

  • Subject to a background/security investigation.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen to apply for this job.
  • Must serve a 1-year probationary period.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid REAL ID-compliant driver’s license.
  • Must be able to type at least 40 words per minute.
  • Must be able to drive a government sedan, minivan, SUV, and/or pickup truck.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all specialized experience and time-in-grade requirements within 45 days of the closing date of this announcement (08/14/2026).

Time-In-Grade Requirement

  • Applicants who are current Federal employees must have held a GS grade for at least 52 weeks at the next lower grade level (GS-05) within the past 52 weeks.
  • Former Federal employees applying for reinstatement or VEOA appointments must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
  • An SF-50 demonstrating time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with application materials.

Specialized Experience

You must have at least one year of specialized experience at the GS-05 level or equivalent, including:

  • Gathering data and coordinating meetings.
  • Establishing and maintaining efficient filing systems.
  • Using computer software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) to generate reports and meet customer needs.
  • Serving as a clearing point for issues or problems, including handling conflicts and communicating with the public under stressful situations.
  • Establishing priorities and meeting deadlines.

Education Substitution

Applicants may substitute education for specialized experience as follows:

  • Successful completion of 1 full year of graduate-level education from an accredited college or university, demonstrating the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for the role.
  • A Bachelor’s degree with Superior Academic Achievement (SAA), defined as:
    • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher out of 4.0 for all completed undergraduate courses, or those completed in the last 2 years.
    • GPA of 3.5 or higher out of 4.0 for all courses in your major field of study, or those completed in the last 2 years.
    • Rank in the upper one-third of your class in the college, university, or major subdivision.
    • Membership in a national honor society (other than freshmen honor societies).
  • A combination of specialized experience and graduate-level education beyond 4 years of undergraduate education.

Physical Requirements

  • Work is conducted outdoors in all weather conditions, including severe heat and cold.
  • Involves walking, standing for long periods, and carrying 23–35 pounds.
  • Approximately half of the work is performed outdoors; the other half is performed in an office setting.
