About the role
Under general supervision, operates, monitors, and maintains the Town’s water treatment facilities to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality drinking water in compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. This is a progressive classification with increasing levels of responsibility and complexity from Operator I to Operator III.
Responsibilities
- Operate, monitor, and adjust water treatment processes including coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, and chemical feed systems.
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on pumps, motors, valves, chemical feeders, and other treatment plant equipment.
- Collect and analyze water samples for turbidity, pH, chlorine residual, alkalinity, hardness, and other parameters; interpret results and make process adjustments as needed.
- Maintain accurate logs, records, and reports of plant operations, maintenance activities, chemical usage, and water quality data.
- Respond to alarms, equipment failures, and emergencies; troubleshoot and resolve issues to minimize service disruptions.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations including the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) rules, and Town policies.
- Assist in the preparation of the annual Consumer Confidence Report (CCR).
- Operate and maintain reverse osmosis (RO) and ion exchange systems (Operator II/III only).
- Train and provide guidance to lower-level operators and new employees (Operator II/III only).
- Participate in the development and implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and emergency response plans (Operator III only).
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid Arizona driver’s license.
- Ability to obtain an Arizona Grade 1 Water Treatment Operator Certification within one year of hire (Operator I).
- Possession of an Arizona Grade 2 Water Treatment Operator Certification (Operator II).
- Possession of an Arizona Grade 3 Water Treatment Operator Certification (Operator III).
- Experience with SCADA systems and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) preferred.
- Knowledge of water chemistry, treatment processes, and relevant regulations.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, work in confined spaces, and perform duties in various weather conditions.
- Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts as required.

Pay
- Operator I: $22.15 - $28.79 per hour
- Operator II: $25.47 - $33.11 per hour
- Operator III: $29.29 - $38.08 per hour
Schedule
- Full-time position, 40 hours per week.
- Rotating shifts including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- On-call rotation required for emergency response.
