About the Role

This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of the Town’s wastewater treatment facilities and collection system. The Wastewater Operator performs a variety of technical and manual tasks in compliance with state and federal regulations to ensure the efficient and safe treatment of wastewater.

Responsibilities

• Operate, monitor, and maintain wastewater treatment processes, including pumps, motors, valves, and related equipment.
• Perform routine inspections, adjustments, and repairs on treatment plant and collection system equipment.
• Collect and analyze wastewater samples; record and report data in accordance with regulatory requirements.
• Respond to alarms, emergencies, and system failures; troubleshoot and resolve operational issues.
• Maintain accurate logs, records, and reports of plant operations, maintenance activities, and chemical usage.
• Assist in the maintenance of lift stations, sewer lines, and related infrastructure.
• Ensure compliance with all safety protocols, environmental regulations, and Town policies.
• Perform preventive maintenance on equipment and facilities to ensure optimal performance.
• Participate in training and professional development opportunities as required.
• May supervise or coordinate the work of lower-level operators or temporary staff, depending on classification (I/II/III).

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s degree or coursework in environmental science, wastewater technology, or a related field is preferred.
• Valid Arizona Class D driver’s license.
• Certification as a Grade I, II, or III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), commensurate with the position level (I/II/III).
• For Wastewater Operator II/III: Minimum of 1–3 years of experience in wastewater treatment operations, including knowledge of advanced treatment processes and regulatory compliance.
• Ability to read, interpret, and follow technical manuals, schematics, and regulatory guidelines.
• Basic computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and wastewater treatment software.
• Physical ability to perform manual labor, lift up to 50 pounds, and work in confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug test.

Pay

$22.00 – $35.00 per hour, depending on certification level and experience.

Schedule

• Full-time position, typically Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime, weekends, or on-call duties as needed.
• Shift work may be required for operational coverage.
