Job Summary

About the role

The Case Worker for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Division at Travis County Health and Human Services (TC-HHS) plays a crucial role in serving the community. TC-HHS aims to improve the quality of life for all residents by addressing vulnerabilities, fostering social and economic well-being, and promoting healthy living.

Responsibilities

  • Interviews clients and collects required documentation to determine eligibility for social services assistance.
  • Makes home visits as needed for clients unable to visit the service site.
  • Provides basic needs counseling and problem-solving assistance.
  • Develops casework/service plans and monitors client progress.
  • Coordinates with other service agencies and organizations to provide appropriate services and information.
  • Serves as an advocate on behalf of clients and makes appropriate referrals.
  • Interprets eligibility requirements and policies to clients and other stakeholders.
  • Assists in contract development and monitoring.
  • Participates in special projects and outreach efforts.
  • Trains clients and the community.
  • Provides short-term case management, crisis intervention, and service coordination.
  • Coordinates arrangements for indigent burials.
  • Recruits, trains, and leads volunteers and staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Social or Behavioral Sciences and two (2) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Texas Driver's License.
  • Fluent/Advanced Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL), or Interpreter Certification from the Board for Evaluation of Interpreters of the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, or National Interpreter Certification from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and unique communication needs of Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Deafblind, and Late-Deafened individuals.
  • Policies, practices, procedures, and terminology of assigned functions.
  • Local social services, organizations, and programs and the resources available.
  • Federal, State, and Local program laws and requirements.
  • Modern office practices, procedures, and methods.
  • Computer equipment to include word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and software packages.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in ASL and written English.
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Referral skills.
  • Math computation skills.
  • Operate a variety of modern office equipment, including a computer and office equipment.
  • Both verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to changing client needs and program priorities.
  • Effective and efficient use of human and financial resources.
  • Manage time well and meet timelines.
  • Work effectively, collaboratively, and courteously under high-pressure circumstances.
