Case Worker - Central Austin: Special Project Worker
Job Summary
Travis County Health and Human Services (HHS) seeks a temporary full-time Special Project Worker – Case Worker. About the Role
This role involves determining applicants' eligibility for various social services, conducting assessments, developing casework/service plans, and providing crisis intervention and short-term case management. The position requires flexibility in scheduling to meet department needs.
Responsibilities
- Interviews clients, collects and completes required documentation, and determines eligibility for assistance based on service regulations and procedures.
- Maintains contract and program compliance, conducts home visits as needed, and provides basic needs counseling.
- Provides problem-solving assistance, acts as an advocate, and makes referrals to other social service, education, and health agencies.
- Coordinates with other service agencies, organizations, and vendors to provide appropriate services and information for clients.
- Interprets eligibility requirements, policy, and procedures to clients, other agencies, vendors, and governmental entities.
- Assists in contract development and monitoring, plans and organizes special projects, and coordinates arrangements for indigent burials.
- Recruits, trains, and leads volunteers and staff.
Requirements
- Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Social or Behavioral Sciences and two (2) years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and experience that meets the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements: Valid Texas Driver's License.

- Knowledge: Policies, practices, procedures, and terminology of assigned function; local social services, organizations, and programs; federal, state, and local program laws and requirements; modern office practices, procedures, and methods; computer equipment and software.
- Skills: Interviewing techniques; problem-solving and decision-making; referring clients to appropriate social services organizations and programs; math computation; operating modern office equipment; both verbal and written communication.
- Abilities: Dealing effectively with persons experiencing crises and economic stress; working under high-pressure circumstances; preparing accurate and complete records and reports; demonstrating consistent, sound, and mature judgment in resource management; managing time well and meeting timelines; communicating effectively; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds occasionally.
