About the role

Under the direction of the Highway Equipment Superintendent I, II, or III, the incumbent supervises a team of mechanics, helpers, and apprentices engaged in constructing, servicing, and repairing automotive, construction, and highway maintenance equipment. This role may be assisted by a CT Heavy Equipment Mechanic Leadworker.

Responsibilities

• Supervise mechanics, helpers, and apprentices in equipment repair and maintenance.
• Keep records, establish training programs, and implement departmental policies.
• Prepare tool and equipment budgets, and make estimates for repairs, improvements, and disposal.
• Make decisions regarding the repair, use, and transportation of equipment.
• Act in the absence of the Highway Equipment Superintendent.
• Direct the efforts of shop and field personnel.
• Maintain a safe workplace and ensure compliance with safety standards.
• Maintain relationships with outside vendors to ensure quality and timely repairs.
• Collaborate with district personnel to keep Caltrans equipment safe and operable.
• Work with other State agencies to promote the economical use of equipment.

Requirements

• Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state-owned or leased vehicle.
• Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Highway Mechanic Supervisor exam. Candidates without current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) or new to state civil service must be on the state examination list.
• This position currently reports to the Orange shop but will transition to the Southern Regional Equipment Repair shop in Santa Fe Springs upon its opening.

Pay

$6,874.00 - $8,137.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Permanent, Full Time. In-office work location in Orange County.
