CALTRANS HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKER

About the role
The Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker performs labor work in connection with the maintenance of State highways, fences, guardrails, and bridges. This includes litter pickup, traffic control, tree maintenance, maintenance of roadside rest areas, and other related tasks. The incumbent operates and maintains various light equipment and performs general laboring tasks associated with the maintenance of the State Highway system.
May be required to work overtime, irregular shifts (including nights, holidays, and weekends), respond to emergency situations, and be loaned to other cost centers. This position is represented under collective bargaining.
Responsibilities
- Perform labor work for the maintenance of State highways, fences, guardrails, and bridges
- Conduct litter pickup and traffic control
- Maintain trees and roadside rest areas
- Operate and maintain various light equipment
- Perform general laboring tasks related to highway maintenance
- Work overtime, irregular shifts, and respond to emergency calls as required
Requirements
- Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license
- Ability to operate both automatic and manual transmissions
- Must pass a drug screening prior to hire
- Eligibility for hire may be determined by score on the CALTRANS HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKER exam (for new or non-current state employees)
- Permanent, intermittent employees may work up to 1,500 hours in any 12 consecutive months
Pay
$4,102.00 - $4,865.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
