About the role
Under the supervision of the Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor and lead direction by a Caltrans Highway Maintenance Leadworker, the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker (CHMW) performs miscellaneous laboring duties in conjunction with maintenance and repair of State highways, and works with the rest of a crew in the performance of these activities. A valid Class C driver’s license is required to operate light vehicles and equipment while performing duties associated with maintaining the State highway system.
The incumbent works individually or with a crew and may occasionally assist in providing guidance to less experienced crew members. Incumbent may be required to work overtime including weekends/holidays if needed, may be required to work temporarily and/or intermittent varied work shifts, and is expected to respond to emergency calls. May be loaned to another crew. Incumbents may also be assigned to perform nonequipment operation duties normally assigned to the class of Caltrans Landscape Maintenance Worker as part of their normal assignment.
The position may require out-of-town travel, usually in week-long increments. This position is represented under collective bargaining.
Responsibilities
- Perform miscellaneous laboring duties related to maintenance and repair of State highways
- Operate light vehicles and equipment with a valid Class C driver’s license
- Work individually or as part of a crew, occasionally guiding less experienced members
- Work overtime, weekends, holidays, and respond to emergency calls as needed
- Work temporarily or intermittently on varied shifts, including nights
- May be loaned to another crew or assigned to landscape maintenance duties
- Travel out-of-town, typically in week-long increments
Requirements
- Valid California Class C driver’s license (required for operating State-owned or leased vehicles)
- Valid California Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) (position requirement)
- Pass a drug screening prior to hire
- Possession of minimum qualifications will be verified prior to interview/appointment
- If basing eligibility on education, unofficial transcripts/diploma must be provided for verification
- Applicants with foreign transcripts/degrees must provide a U.S. equivalency evaluation report
Qualifications
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the CALTRANS HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE WORKER exam. For those without current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) or new to state civil service, you must be on the state examination list to qualify. Pay
$4,102.00 - $4,865.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
