CALTRANS EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II

About the role

The Caltrans Equipment Operator II performs a wide variety of laboring and equipment operation functions to maintain California highways, bridges, landscaping, and roadside rests. Depending on workload, the incumbent may work under different supervisors and units. The role involves operating vehicles requiring a Class A commercial driver license with a tank vehicle endorsement and servicing equipment used in highway maintenance, structures maintenance, emergency service, landscape, or construction. When not operating equipment, duties may include those of a Caltrans Equipment Operator I, Highway Maintenance Worker, or Landscape Maintenance Worker.

Responsibilities

• Operate and service heavy equipment for highway, bridge, and roadside maintenance.
• Perform laboring duties as needed, including those outlined for Caltrans Equipment Operator I, Highway Maintenance Worker, or Landscape Maintenance Worker.
• Work in extreme weather conditions, including temperatures up to 120°F and as low as -15°F, as well as strong winds, rain, sleet, and snow.
• Work night shifts during November through April or as scheduled by the Maintenance Supervisor.
• Work overtime, including weekends and holidays, due to storms, emergencies, or special projects.
• Adhere to a 9/80 work schedule, subject to change at the discretion of District Management.

Requirements

• Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement (for Caltrans Equipment Operator II).
• Valid Class B commercial driver’s license with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement (for Caltrans Equipment Operator I).
• Pass a background investigation, including Live Scan fingerprinting for Department of Justice and FBI clearances.
• Pass a drug screening prior to hire.
• Eligibility for hire may be determined by score on the Caltrans Equipment Operator II exam. New candidates must be on the state examination list for eligibility.

Pay

• Caltrans Equipment Operator II: $4,883.00 - $6,127.00 per month. New hires start at the minimum salary of the classification.
• Caltrans Equipment Operator I: $4,571.00 - $5,710.00 per month.

Schedule

• Permanent, full-time position.
• 9/80 work schedule (subject to change at the discretion of management).
• May require night shifts during November through April.
• Overtime may be required, including weekends and holidays, due to storms, emergencies, or special projects.
