About the role

The Caltrans Equipment Operator II is responsible for the general maintenance of State highways, freeways, landscaped areas, and/or bridges. Under the direction of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor or designee, and with lead guidance from a Caltrans Leadworker, the incumbent will service, maintain, and operate equipment requiring a Class A commercial driver's license with tank endorsement. When not operating equipment, the incumbent may perform duties outlined for Caltrans Equipment Operator I, Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker, or Caltrans Landscape Maintenance Worker as part of normal duties.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment used in highway and bridge maintenance.
  • Perform general maintenance tasks on State highways, freeways, landscaped areas, and bridges.
  • Service and maintain assigned equipment, ensuring operational readiness.
  • Perform duties of Caltrans Equipment Operator I, Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker, or Caltrans Landscape Maintenance Worker when not operating equipment.

Requirements

  • Valid California Class A commercial driver’s license with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement.
  • Pass a drug screening prior to hire.
  • Clear a background investigation prior to hire.
  • Possess a valid California Driver’s License (CDL) and provide details (number, class, expiration date, endorsements/restrictions) on the application.
  • Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Equipment Operator II exam. New candidates must be on the state examination list for eligibility.

Qualifications

Possession of minimum qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If basing eligibility on education, unofficial transcripts/diploma must be provided for verification. Applicants with foreign transcripts/degrees must provide a U.S. equivalency evaluation report from a recognized agency (e.g., NACES or AICE).

Pay

$4,883.00 - $6,127.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
