About Us

CDM Smith is a place where amazing career journeys unfold. We are committed to offering an unmatched employee experience, where you work on meaningful projects, shape your career journey, and collaborate with co-workers invested in your success. We encourage personal leadership, career growth, and development, providing the tools and resources to help you do your best. Our goal is to foster a challenging, progressive, and inclusive work environment that values passionate individuals who challenge the norm and deliver world-class solutions.

About the Role

With high-level goals provided, you will prepare basic to highly complex intelligent models, details, and general arrangement drawings through proper translation of level of design (LOD). On transit and multimodal projects, you will coordinate and integrate intelligent models across all design disciplines—architecture, vertical structures, transportation structures, roadway design, and MEP—into federated, clash-checked, deliverable-ready models.

  • Cross-discipline coordination: Serve as the firm's go-to Intelligent Modeling Coordinator for transit and multimodal projects, coordinating deliverables across disciplines into a single federated, clash-checked model throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Model coordination & clash detection: Run clash detection in Navisworks and lead resolution across disciplines, catching conflicts early rather than in late-stage design or construction.
  • Standards & governance: Establish, document, and enforce CADD/BIM standards, templates, and workflows across offices, built on the Autodesk stack and compliant with governing transit agency and DOT design criteria.
  • Mentorship & guidance: Provide lower-level modeling personnel with design sketches, guidance in refining technical requirements, and training to build institutional capability.
  • Act as Intelligent Modeling Coordinator for basic to highly complex projects to ensure coordination between the design team.
  • Perform crosschecks of drawings for consistency, adherence to Q/QC standards, and layering guidelines.
  • Perform CADD/technical support tasks such as verifying intelligent model integrity, managing model health and versioning, and maintaining interoperability across the Autodesk toolset (and Bentley where required).
  • Review manufacturers' or fabricators' prints for aid in design documents.
  • Determine material needs and perform calculations using accepted formulas and references per the firm's standards.
  • Establish design criteria for assigned project phases requiring engineering principles, material properties, and familiarity with construction procedures.
  • Provide conceptual input during planning stages and support or lead field assignments as required.
  • Develop BIM Execution Plans, contribute to model-based deliverable scoping, and advise pursuit teams on integration approach, LOD, and production level of effort (LOE).
  • Interface with clients, agencies, and subconsultants on model deliverable requirements, coordination expectations, and data handoff standards.
  • Perform related engineering support tasks such as plotting drawings, preparing transmittals, file management, and assisting in simple design calculations.

Skills & Abilities

  • Cross-discipline coordination: Demonstrated ability to coordinate intelligent models across architecture, vertical structures, transportation structures, roadway design, and MEP.
  • Agency & DOT standards: Strong working knowledge of transit agency and DOT design standards, and the ability to build and enforce compliant CADD/BIM standards.
  • Software fluency: Advanced working knowledge of intelligent modeling/CADD drafting commands and expert-level fluency in the Autodesk stack (Civil 3D/AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks).
  • Excellent communication skills with strict attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt to changing requirements and mentor production staff across geographies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office for design-related tasks.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent with vocational technical training in basic CADD drafting technology and intelligent modeling.
  • 12 years of related experience.
  • Domestic and/or international travel may be required (10% or less).
  • Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience on transit-specific projects (BRT, LRT/rail, station and platform design, transit facilities).
  • Direct familiarity with specific transit agency and DOT CADD/BIM standards (e.g., MARTA, MBTA, MTA, DART, CTA, and state DOTs such as GDOT, Caltrans, IDOT, TDOT, PennDOT).
  • Working knowledge of the Bentley stack (MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer) for projects mandating it.
  • Experience authoring BIM Execution Plans and model-based deliverable scoping.
  • Familiarity with related tools and data-management platforms (Synchro, Autodesk Construction Cloud/BIM 360, ProjectWise).
  • Prior role as a firm- or region-wide CADD/BIM resource supporting multiple offices.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating intelligent models across multiple disciplines on transportation or multimodal projects.
