About the role
Responsible for meeting all Emergency Department patients and completing the required Emergency Department patient registration documentation.
Responsibilities
- Collects, verifies and records patient demographic and insurance data accurately.
- Procures and documents patient insurance coverage.
- Inputs data into the Hospital EMR and generates Emergency Department chart and patient ID bracket.
- Confirms patient ID bracket information and places on patient wrist.
- Escorts patient to various areas within the hospital.
- Responds to telephone inquiries in a timely professional manner.
- Maintains accurate list of available hospital beds at all times.
- Prepares and distributes all Emergency Department lists.
- Prepares and completes insurance forms for patients with adequate coverage.
- Refers cases without adequate financial coverage (uninsured and under insured) to the Finance Department for Medicaid application.
- Obtains and documents updated patient demographics and coverage changes (e.g., name, address, current insurance, telephone numbers, etc.).
- Informs patients of all hospital or regulatory rules and regulations such as Health Care Proxy, admission consents, etc.
- Obtains all required patient signatures.
- Records patient information in ED log in a legible manner.
- Assists callers in locating admitted patients.
- Maintains accurate patient log for each processing area to include the patient’s final disposition and all other required data fields.
- Prepares statistical data reports (e.g., total amount of expirations, admissions, discharges, registrants, etc.).
- Advises patients of our Financial Assistance Program.
- Assigns in-patient bed and advises each unit of all impending admissions.
- Assigns discharge numbers and discharges patients from the system.
- Performs other related duties as requested.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Graduate from an accredited college/university preferred.
- Minimum two (2) years clerical experience in hospital or health care environment.
Skills
- Typing (45-60 wpm) accurately, required.
- Proficient in computer database programs, required.
- Ability to read and communicate effectively in English.
- Excellent verbal/written/communication skills.
- Basic computer skills/knowledge with Word and Excel.
Physical Requirements
- Involves walking, sitting, talking, hearing, stretching, reaching and bending.
- May include some repetitive motions.
