Building Technician I/II

About the role

The City of Folsom is seeking a Building Technician I/II to join the Building Services Division. This position is Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm and sits at a public counter located in Folsom City Hall.

Responsibilities

• Provide customer service and information to the public regarding building issues, processes, and requirements.
• Receive, review, route, and process plan checks and building permit applications.
• Issue building permits.
• Collect, record, and balance permit-related monetary transactions.
• Respond to the public’s inquiries via email, phone or in-person and assist with navigating through the development and permitting process.
• Manage the current building permit activity from submittal through issuance and to building final.
• Oversee, monitor, and/or direct the work of lower level personnel.

Requirements

• Knowledge of planning approval and building permit processes and procedures, specification requirements, and construction practices.
• Experience in technical plan check work, field, and/or office building inspections or planning work.
• Ability to learn building inspection and planning policies and procedures, construction, design, and land use regulations and ordinances.
• Ability to receive, understand, and respond to public service requests.
• Ability to explain and interpret building-related policies and regulations accurately and tactfully to the public.
• Ability to review plans for completeness and calculate permit fees in accordance with established laws, ordinances, and policies.
• Ability to enter data into a computer system accurately.
• Ability to perform arithmetic calculations.
• Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Qualifications

• Education: Thirty (30) semester units in planning, drafting, engineering, building inspection, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
• Experience: One (1) year of experience in technical plan check work, field, and/or office building inspections or planning work.

Skills

• Customer service practices.

Pay

The salary range for Building Technician I is (M41) is $57,847.15 - $73,279.04 annually and Building Technician II (M45) is $63,768.79 - $80,780.39 annually with the City typically hiring at step 1.
