About the Role
The City of Arcadia is seeking a professional, customer-focused Building Technician I/II to join the Development Services Department. As the public face of the Building & Safety Division, this position plays a vital role in delivering exceptional customer service by assisting residents, contractors, and design professionals with the building permit process, answering questions at the public counter, routing construction plans for review, and issuing permits in accordance with established procedures. The ideal candidate is a people-oriented professional who enjoys working with the public and thrives in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Successful candidates will possess excellent communication and customer service skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to quickly learn and navigate new software applications. Experience with permit tracking software, prior Permit Technician experience, or the ability to read and interpret construction plans is beneficial but not required.
Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of technical, administrative, and clerical tasks in support of assigned office functions, including preparing documents, maintaining records, and operating standard office equipment.
- Serve as the initial public contact for Building Services; answer general questions concerning building and safety functions, explain ordinances, procedures, and requirements to citizens, developers, and contractors.
- Prepare, enter, and maintain building application and permit records in both hard copy and computerized tracking systems.
- Prepare inspection reports, log inspection requests, and maintain a log of daily inspections.
- Check building plans and issue building permits for residential additions and alterations; calculate and collect fees for various applications, registrations, and licenses.
- Receive residential and commercial permit applications and plans; coordinate with other departments and follow up on permit status.
- Enforce and interpret building-related codes and ordinances, including California Building, Plumbing, Mechanical, and Electrical Codes.
- Maintain and update logs of building plans under review; manage Building Division files and databases.
- Manage, maintain, and enhance permit tracking/issuance software and technology resources, including public-facing components.
- Develop databases, create property reports, and ensure quality control of permit issuance.
- Attend and participate in meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in building inspection.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements

Pay
Building Technician I: $62,412.00 - $77,892.00 Annually
Building Technician II: $68,844.00 - $85,956.00 Annually
Note: Newly hired candidates typically start at the first step of the salary range (Step A); however, a higher step within the salary range may be negotiated based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, and skillset.
