About the role

The Position(s): Adult Protective Services Workers are located exclusively in the Department of Adult and Aging Services of the Social Services Agency.

Promotional Opportunities: Adult Protective Services Worker II may advance by competitive examination to: Adult Protective Services Supervisor - $3380.80- Current Bi-Weekly Maximum Minimum Qualifications

Requirements

  • EITHER I EDUCATION: Possession of a Master’s Degree in Social Welfare, Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Gerontology or related behavioral science, from an accredited college or university, which included a supervised field placement providing social casework and counseling services to dependent adults and their families.
  • OR II EXPERIENCE: The equivalent of three years of full-time experience as an Adult Protective Services Worker I in the Alameda County classified service (non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and Consolidated Courts); AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Recommendation for promotion based on the performance evaluation.
  • OR III EDUCATION: Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, including 30 semester or 45 quarter units in social/human services, sociology, social welfare or other behavioral science, AND EXPERIENCE: The equivalent of three years of full-time experience providing ongoing social casework and/or counseling services to the mentally ill and/or elderly as an Assistant Public Guardian-Conservator.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities The examination may include, but may not be limited to: KNOWLEDGE OF crisis intervention techniques and principles, principles of sociology and psychology, interviewing techniques, available community resources and their appropriate utilization, relevant Federal, State, and local laws, regulations and codes. ABILITY TO quickly and accurately assess situations encountered, exercise sound judgment in determining courses of action, deal effectively with hostile/aggressive clients and others contacted during the course of work, and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

BENEFITS FOR NON-MANAGEMENT POSITIONS Continued VACATION AND SICK LEAVE WITH PAY Vacation accrual ranges from two weeks to five weeks depending upon years of service and the union bargaining unit to which the position is assigned. Sick leave accruals are based on the union bargaining unit and are defined in the corresponding Memorandum of Understanding.

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (EAP) The County has an EAP available for employees, spouses/domestic partners and eligible dependents. This program provides services such as: counseling, financial consulting, child and elder care consulting and some legal counseling.

DISABILITY or INCOME REPLACEMENT Two voluntary plans are offered: Short-term Disability and Long-term Disability can be purchased through a payroll deduction or with accrued vacation hours depending upon the union bargaining unit.

LONG TERM CARE This voluntary benefit extends care for yourself and/or your spouse and/or your parents who experience a serious accident, chronic illness or frailties of old age. Places where care can be provided are: in one’s home, at a nursing home, at an assisted living facility or adult day care center.

SAVINGS BONDS Series EE Bonds and Series I Bonds can be purchased through a payroll deduction for yourself, a child, nephew/niece, and grandchild.

RETIREMENT The County retirement program is a Defined Benefit plan and is governed under the provisions of the 1937 Act systems. The County’s retirement is based on one’s age upon entrance, compensation, years of service and specific percentage of employee/employer contributions with the County’s portion vesting after five years of employment.

Deferred Compensation The County offers a Deferred Compensation program where an eligible employee who works at least 50% of their standard hours in a pay period can voluntarily contribute on a pre-tax basis, a minimum of $10 up to a total annual contribution of $16,500 for the 2009 Plan Year.
