About the Role

A Bridge Repair Assistant performs a variety of semiskilled maintenance and repair activities across multiple trades related to bridge repair and maintenance. Duties may include operating equipment, preparing materials, and supporting emergency response efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Cut steel plates and bars using acetylene cutting equipment, following layout, design, and instructions; grind edges to prepare for welding.
  • Manufacture wooden building forms for concrete work as directed.
  • Operate concrete mixers and prepare mixtures for specific uses, such as patching deck holes or replacing deteriorated concrete on structural members.
  • Set up and operate sandblasting equipment, adding sand as needed during operation.
  • Scrape scaling and deteriorated paint from structural steel using hand tools; apply primer and overcoat.
  • Clean and seal deck joints by removing old filler with hand or power tools and pouring heated tar into joints.
  • Operate light highway equipment, including dump trucks, patching machines, and rollers, for bridge repair and maintenance.
  • Report to bridge towers to operate movable bridges, including using marine VHF radios to communicate with boat captains.
  • Work independently and without direct supervision, including weekends and/or evenings.
  • Support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergencies as part of the Incident Command System.

Requirements

  • Journey Level: Two years of experience in maintenance or mechanical work under a skilled tradesperson, or completion of a technical course in bridge or technical trades at a school or institute. Requires a Class B Commercial Driver License.
  • Trainee 2: More than one year but less than two years of qualifying experience (as described for Journey Level) and a Commercial Driver License.
  • Trainee 1: Less than one year of qualifying experience (as described for Journey Level) and a Class D Motor Vehicle License.
  • Must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
  • Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this role and may be tested during pre-employment screening or result in disqualification or removal from employment.

Pay

  • Bridge Repair Assistant Trainee 1: $57,465 (base salary: $46,759 + $10,706 geographic pay differential).
  • Bridge Repair Assistant Trainee 2: $59,475 (base salary: $48,963 + $10,512 geographic pay differential).
  • Bridge Repair Assistant (Journey Level): $62,641 (base salary: $52,413 + $10,228 geographic pay differential + $4,000 location pay differential).

Schedule

Must be available to work shifts that may include weekends and/or evenings.
