Bridge Repair Assistant/Trainee 1/Trainee 2 (Region 4)

About the role

Performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair activities across multiple trades associated with bridge repair and maintenance. Work includes cutting, grinding, forming, concrete mixing, sandblasting, painting, deck/joint repair, equipment operation, winter maintenance, and emergency response support.

Responsibilities

• Cut steel plates and bars using chemtane cutting equipment per layout, design, and instructions; grind edges to base metal for welding.
• Manufacture wooden building forms for concrete work according to directions.
• Operate concrete mixers and prepare proper mixtures for patching deck holes or replacing deteriorated concrete on structural members.
• Set up and tend sandblasting equipment; add sand as necessary during operation.
• Remove scaling and deteriorated paint from structural steel using hand tools; apply primer and overcoat.
• Repair decks and joints by removing old material with hand/power tools and jackhammers; place new concrete materials.
• Operate highway equipment such as dump trucks, patching machines, rollers, and related machinery used in bridge repair and maintenance.
• Perform snow and ice removal during winter maintenance operations.
• Participate in the department’s respiratory protection program.
• Serve in the Incident Command System to support regional and statewide emergency responses as assigned.

Requirements

• Journey Level: Two years’ experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesman, or completion of a technical course in a bridge or technical trade at a school or institute; must possess a Class B Commercial Driver License.
• Trainee 2: Class B Commercial Driver License and more than one year but less than two years of qualifying experience.
• Trainee 1: Class D Motor Vehicle License and less than one year of qualifying experience.
• Cannabis use is prohibited; pre-employment screening includes cannabis testing and may result in disqualification or removal.
• Must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Pay

• Bridge Repair Assistant Trainee 1: $51,616 (base $42,616 + $9,000 geographic differential)
• Bridge Repair Assistant Trainee 2: $53,818 (base $44,818 + $9,000 geographic differential)
• Bridge Repair Assistant: $58,667 (base $49,667 + $9,000 geographic differential)
