Bridge Repair Assistant TR1/TR2/BRA - (Region 6) Horseheads

About the Role

A Bridge Repair Assistant performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair activities across multiple trades associated with bridge repair and maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Cut steel plates and bars using chemtane cutting equipment according to layout, design, and instructions; grind edges to prepare for welding.
• Manufacture wooden building forms for concrete work as directed.
• Operate concrete mixers and prepare proper mixtures for specific uses, such as patching deck holes or replacing deteriorated concrete on structural members.
• Set up and operate sandblasting equipment, monitor during use, and replenish sand as needed.
• Scrape scaling and deteriorated paint from structural steel using hand tools; apply primer and overcoat.
• Repair decks and joints by removing old material with hand/power tools and jackhammers; place new concrete materials.
• Operate various highway equipment, including dump trucks, patching machines, and rollers used in bridge repair and maintenance.
• Perform Winter Maintenance, including snow and ice removal activities.
• Participate in the department’s written respiratory protection program.
• Serve a role within the Incident Command System to support emergency response efforts at regional and statewide levels.

Requirements

• Journey Level: Two years of experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson, or completion of a technical course in bridge or technical trade at a school or institute. Requires a Class B Commercial Driver License.
• Trainee 2: More than one year but less than two years of qualifying experience (as described in Journey Level) and a Commercial Driver License.
• Trainee 1: Less than one year of qualifying experience (as described in Journey Level) and a Class D Motor Vehicle License.

• Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
• All candidates must pass a pre-employment physical/medical examination and drug test prior to employment.
• Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this role and will be tested during pre-employment screening; positive results may disqualify candidates or result in removal from employment.

Pay

• Bridge Repair Assistant Trainee 1: Starting salary of $48,855 ($39,855 base + $9,000 geographic pay differential).
• Bridge Repair Assistant Trainee 2: Starting salary of $51,058 ($42,058 base + $9,000 geographic pay differential).
• Bridge Repair Assistant (Journey Level): Starting salary of $55,905 ($46,905 base + $9,000 geographic pay differential).

The salary range reflects the full range for this graded position. New employees are hired at the starting rate of the position. Promotions are calculated in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules, and negotiated union contracts.
