About the role

The U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) is hiring for full-time, entry-level, career positions in federal law enforcement. These positions offer excellent base pay, exceptional benefits, and significant incentives, including up to $60,000 in additional incentives.

Responsibilities

  • Deterring illicit activity and safeguarding the American people by protecting borders and enforcing immigration laws.
  • Inspecting documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations.
  • Maintaining surveillance and conducting night operations to prevent and apprehend undocumented individuals and smugglers.
  • Interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry.
  • Performing various types of checks, including farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks.
  • Patrolling the international boundary and coastal waterways using a variety of government assets.

Requirements

  • One year of general work experience demonstrating the ability to take charge, make sound decisions, and maintain composure in stressful situations.
  • One year of specialized work experience showing skills necessary for making sound judgments and decisions in the use of firearms, dealing effectively with people in a courteous manner, and analyzing information rapidly.
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Ability to speak and read Spanish, as well as English.

Qualifications

  • GL-5: Experience or education as outlined.
  • GL-7: Experience or education as outlined, with a bachelor's degree and superior academic achievement.
  • GL-9 and GS-11: Previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience.

Pay

Annual Base Salary for newly appointed Border Patrol Agents varies per grade, as follows: GL-5/GL-7 $51,632- $92,912 per year.

Schedule

U.S. Border Patrol determines duty assignments at the time of offer based on operational needs, which may or may not align with candidates’ first-choice preferences. Relocation may be required.

Benefits

  • Up to $20,000 in recruitment incentive upon successful completion of the Border Patrol Academy.
  • Up to $40,000 in retention incentive distributed over the first four years.

Pay Reform Act

A fully trained Border Patrol Agent may be eligible for up to an additional 25% of base pay per the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with a grade level progression of GL-5, GL-7, GL-9, GS-11, and GS-12.

Location

Duty locations include the Southwest Border, including prioritized locations such as Sierra Blanca, TX; Presidio, TX; Sanderson, TX; Comstock, TX; Lordsburg, NM; Freer, TX; Hebbronville, TX; Ajo, AZ. Relocation may be required.
