About the role

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and consistently going out of your way to connect readers with the right titles and products. You maintain the attractive presentation of the store and ensure its efficient running by unpacking and shelving deliveries, tidying displays, and working registers in a quick and friendly manner.

Behaviors

We expect you to maintain reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts, fill scheduling gaps when able, and be flexible and responsive to the needs of the store. You should approach work with purpose and energy, support and consider colleagues, and always be cheerful with customers. You must show aptitude and willingness to learn new skills and enjoy being a bookseller.

Responsibilities

  • Master operational competencies including using registers, computers, tablets, and other tools.
  • Develop merchandising and visual merchandising skills to maintain book presentation and cleanliness across product categories.
  • Run registers competently to serve customers quickly and reliably.
  • Support receiving, unpacking, and efficient shelving of deliveries.
  • Locate books and products using knowledge, colleagues, BookMaster, and available tools.
  • Support the café team when needed.
  • Understand loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques, identify theft, and address problematic behavior.
  • Perform physical tasks including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and walking.
  • Collaborate with other stores when needed to support the wider Cluster.

Career growth and development

As you gain experience, you will build book knowledge across fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books to maintain sections, present books attractively, and make effective recommendations. You will learn to sell books in ways appreciated by customers, supporting sales objectives such as Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, and preorders. You will also build expertise in educational toys and games, specialty games, hobby and collectibles, music, movies, and newsstand to maintain sections, manage backstock, and assist customers. Mastery of these skills can lead to advancement to Senior Bookseller.
