About the role

A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and consistently going out of your way to connect readers with the right titles and products. You maintain the attractive presentation of the store and ensure its efficient running by unpacking and shelving deliveries, tidying displays, and working registers quickly and professionally.

Behaviors

We expect you to maintain reliable and punctual attendance for scheduled shifts, fill scheduling gaps when able, and be flexible and responsive to the needs of the store. You should approach work with positivity and energy, support colleagues with kindness, and consistently provide cheerful customer service. A willingness to learn new skills and a genuine enjoyment of bookselling are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Use varied technology, including registers, computers, tablets, and programs, comfortably and efficiently.
  • Maintain book presentation and cleanliness through strong merchandising skills.
  • Apply effective visual merchandising to gifting, toys, and other product categories.
  • Run registers competently to serve customers quickly and reliably.
  • Support receiving, unpacking, and efficient shelving of deliveries.
  • Locate books and products accurately using knowledge, colleagues, BookMaster, and available tools.
  • Assist the café team when needed.
  • Understand loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques; identify theft and problematic behavior.
  • Perform physical tasks including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and frequent walking.
  • Collaborate with other stores within the Cluster as needed.

Career growth and expectations

As you gain experience, your bookselling knowledge and skills will develop. You will contribute more by building expertise in fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, educational toys, games, specialty games, hobby and collectibles, music, movies, and newsstand. You will maintain sections, make effective recommendations, and support sales objectives such as Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, and preorders.

Advancement to Senior Bookseller is expected as you master the skills outlined in this role, with opportunities for further growth.
