About the role
A Barnes & Noble bookstore is a gathering place for readers and the community. As a Bookseller, you are an integral member of the bookselling team at the heart of our stores. You welcome customers in a cheerful and helpful way by saying hello, answering questions, and consistently going out of your way to connect readers with the right titles and products. You maintain the attractive presentation of the store and ensure its efficient running, including unpacking and shelving deliveries, tidying displays, and working registers quickly and professionally.

Responsibilities
- Master operational competencies of a Barnes & Noble bookseller, including using varied technology (registers, computers, tablets, programs) comfortably and efficiently.
- Develop strong merchandising skills to maintain book presentation and store cleanliness.
- Develop effective visual merchandising skills to maintain presentation in gifting, toys, and other product categories.
- Run a register competently to serve customers quickly and reliably.
- Support receiving and unpacking of deliveries and efficient, accurate shelving.
- Find books and other products with ease and accuracy using knowledge, colleagues, BookMaster, and available information tools.
- Support the café team when needed.
- Understand loss prevention procedures and de-escalation techniques, identifying theft and problematic behavior.
- Perform physical tasks including prolonged standing, repetitive bending, lifting, and a lot of walking.
- Work collaboratively across stores within the Cluster when needed.
Skills and development
As you gain experience, your bookselling knowledge and skills will develop. You will increasingly contribute to the store by building book knowledge across fiction, nonfiction, and children’s books, maintaining sections, and presenting books attractively. You will make effective recommendations to customers, support sales objectives such as Monthly Picks, Book of the Year, Membership, and preorders, and share this knowledge with customers and colleagues. You will also build expertise in educational toys and games, specialty games, hobby and collectibles, music, movies, and newsstand, supporting section maintenance, backstock, and key sales objectives.
