Biologist

About the role

We are looking for a Biologist to support advanced scientific research activities focused on inner ear cellular biology within the Laboratory of Cell Structure and Dynamics within the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). This is a full-time position located in Bethesda, MD.

Responsibilities

• Assists with performing basic laboratory experiments and procedures.
• Collect and analyze biological data about relationships among and between organisms and their environment.
• Prepares, organizes, and maintains various lab samples, supplies, and equipment.
• Analyze laboratory findings.
• Learns new laboratory techniques and procedures.
• Perform sample preparation for studies of rodent inner ear cellular biology.
• Operate laboratory equipment to analyze samples.
• Program and use computers to store, process, and analyze data.
• Support investigations through the design and execution of laboratory experiments and preparation of biological specimens.
• Manage transgenic mouse colonies and assist with microscopy data collection and interpretation.
• Prepare written summaries of experimental findings, including figures and interpretations for presentations and publications.
• Provide periodic literature summaries and contribute to lab inventory tracking and maintenance documentation.
• Deliver progress updates during meetings or as requested by leadership.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in biology or a related field.
• A minimum of ONE (1) year of relevant laboratory experience.
• Experience or academic exposure to laboratory techniques and biological data analysis.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a laboratory setting with small animals (rodents).
• Experience with computational analysis of microscopy data.
• Experience working with transgenic mice and managing mouse colonies.
• Strong organizational skills for maintaining lab samples, supplies, and documentation.
• Ability to perform repetitive lab activities and handle standard lab equipment safely.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD “public trust”.

Qualifications

Candidates with an active public trust or suitability are preferred.

Skills

Familiarity with state-of-the-art confocal microscopy systems, experience with sample preparation techniques for confocal microscopy, and exposure to scientific literature review and technical writing for research environments are desirable.

Pay

The annual salary range for this position is $56,000.00-$94,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
