About the Role

The Division of Animal Resources Health and Safety within the Emory National Biomedical Research Center at Emory University (ENBRC) is seeking a full-time, temporary Lead Biohazard Waste Specialist to cover a leave of absence. This role involves maintaining consistent and compliant procedures across key safety functions, including biohazardous waste collection, eyewash station inspections, and personal protective equipment (PPE) distribution. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong attention to detail, reliability, and strict adherence to safety protocols while supporting team operations and maintaining a positive attitude.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and handle biohazardous waste management for research facilities, including waste pick-up, documentation, and interaction with external waste management companies.
  • Train and provide direction to staff on biohazardous waste handling and safety procedures.
  • Order and stock personal protective equipment (PPE) and conduct operational checks of eyewash stations.
  • Stock lab coats and manage laundry facilities for reusable safety equipment.
  • Conduct weekly inspections and flushing of eyewash stations to ensure operational readiness.
  • Operate a golf cart for biohazardous waste removal and transport of supplies.
  • Use a portable radio to communicate with teammates and other departments.
  • Assist with administrative tasks such as data entry, proofreading, filing, copying, preparing research forms, and labeling items.
  • Adhere to strict safety and regulatory guidelines, including proper handling of biohazardous waste (blood and tissue) and sharps.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of directly related experience, including proper handling of biohazardous waste materials.
  • Experience functioning in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • Ability to read, write, and lift up to 75 lbs.
  • Valid Georgia driver’s license (positions in this classification may require it).
  • Willingness to learn basic computer skills and biohazardous waste handling procedures.

Working Environment

  • Work schedule: 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday; no regular weekends, with occasional coverage during Winter Break if needed.
  • Indoor/outdoor work environment, including exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Potential exposure to biohazardous waste (blood and tissue) and sharps; adherence to safety precautions required.
  • Physical requirements include bending, kneeling, pushing, moving heavy boxes, squatting, and occasionally lifting up to 75 lbs.

Pre-Employment Screening

This position requires pre-employment screenings, which may include a background check, verification of work history, academic credentials, licenses, certifications, a drug screening with health assessment, and review/mandate for various vaccinations. Updated COVID-19 vaccinations may be necessary for specific research projects. This is an in-person role; remote work is not an option.
