About the role

The Associate Tax Auditor (ATA) conducts difficult and complex audits and investigations of businesses suspected of intentionally operating in the underground economy to ensure statewide uniformity in the application of law. Under the direction of the Joint Enforcement Strike Force (JESF), Tax Administrator I, the ATA develops lead referrals to Area Audit Offices or to Investigation Division (ID) for appropriate action and demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of audit procedures, and applicable policies, laws, and rulings affecting Tax Branch Programs.

The ATA assists in providing training, investigative assistance, audit support, and technical advice to auditors and investigators in the Employment Development Department and other State agencies. The ATA may also represent the Department at hearings.

This position is located in Fresno, CA and may be eligible for limited telework. California Government Code Section 14200 requires employees to reside in California to telecommute. Employees are required to report to their headquarters office as needed. Travel expenses to and from the assigned headquarters are the responsibility of the employee. This position may also be filled in Sacramento, CA.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure statewide uniformity in the application of law.
  • Develop lead referrals to Area Audit Offices or to Investigation Division (ID) for appropriate action.
  • Provide training, investigative assistance, audit support, and technical advice to auditors and investigators in the Employment Development Department and other State agencies.
  • Represent the Department at hearings.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge of audit procedures, and applicable policies, laws, and rulings affecting Tax Branch Programs.
  • Ability to develop lead referrals and provide technical advice.
  • Eligibility for Departmental Promotional exam for EDD employees (next exam tentatively scheduled for May 2027).

Qualifications

Individuals who are currently in the classification, eligible for lateral transfer, eligible for reinstatement, have list or LEAP eligibility, are in the process of obtaining list eligibility, or have SROA and/or Surplus eligibility may apply. SROA and Surplus candidates are given priority.

Pay

$6,646.00 - $8,740.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Effective July 1, 2025, specific Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% - 4.62% in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month.

Schedule

  • Permanent, Full Time
  • Work Shift: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Work Week: Monday - Friday
  • Hybrid work schedule may be eligible, at the discretion of the department.
