About the role

This position is part of the Tax Branch, Field Audit and Compliance Division's Compliance Development Operations - Labor Enforcement Task Force - North.
The Associate Tax Auditor conducts complex field audits and investigations of businesses and organizations suspected of intentionally operating in the underground economy to uphold the California Unemployment Insurance Code (CUIC) and California tax regulations. The role involves developing and forwarding lead referrals to Area Audit Offices or the Investigation Division, presenting information to internal and external customers, and representing the Department at hearings. Field work in a team environment is required.
The Labor Enforcement Task Force (LETF) program targets the most egregious offenders in the underground economy. The Associate Tax Auditor will conduct on-site inspections and audits of non-compliant businesses in partnership with agencies such as the Department of Consumer Affairs, Employment Development Department, and Department of Industrial Relations.
This position is located at 1050 O Street, Fresno, CA 93721, and may be eligible for limited hybrid telework. Employees must reside in California to telecommute per California Government Code Section 14200 and may be required to report to the headquarters office as needed. Travel expenses to and from the assigned headquarters are the responsibility of the employee.
Effective July 1, 2025, specific bargaining units and excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% - 4.62% in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025).
Responsibilities
- Conduct complex field audits and investigations of businesses suspected of operating in the underground economy.
- Develop and forward lead referrals to Area Audit Offices or the Investigation Division for appropriate action.
- Present and communicate audit findings verbally and in writing to internal and external customers.
- Represent the Department at hearings.
- Perform on-site inspections and audits of non-compliant businesses as part of the Labor Enforcement Task Force (LETF).
- Collaborate with partner agencies including the Department of Consumer Affairs, Employment Development Department, and Department of Industrial Relations.
Requirements
- Eligibility for lateral transfer, reinstatement, list or LEAP eligibility, or in the process of obtaining list eligibility.
- Must meet the Minimum Qualifications stated in the Classification Specification for Associate Tax Auditor.
- Must reside in California if telecommuting.
- A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required as part of the application process.
Pay
$6,646.00 - $8,740.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
