Associate Professor, Clinical Faculty Appointment, Emergency Medicine

This is a faculty position reporting to the Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine, who reports to the Head of the Division of Internal Medicine.

Responsibilities

The Associate Professor will:

• Provide clinical expertise in patient care management and create an appropriate teaching environment for fellows, residents, and students in Emergency Medicine.
• Exercise outstanding analytical skills to assess patient medical problems and advise on care improvements.
• Manage patients and their families with compassion and professionalism.
• Deliver emergency medicine care to cancer patients, with significant clinical time dedicated to this role.
• Pursue clinical research, academic teaching, mentoring of oncologic emergency medicine fellows, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals during protected time.

Clinical Practice (75%)

• Represent the Department of Emergency Medicine in local, regional, state, and national matters related to Oncologic Emergency Medicine, including travel and dissemination of information.
• Practice clinical medicine in compliance with standards set by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners and the American College of Emergency Physicians.
• Provide physician coverage for the Emergency Department, which operates 24/7/365, with shifts ranging from 8 to 12 hours.
• Perform tasks including diagnosing problems, ordering tests, treating symptoms, and creating post-emergency treatment plans.
• Conduct invasive procedures as required by the specialty.
• Document diagnoses and care comprehensively using the EPIC-based electronic health record, completing documentation within 48 hours of service.
• Correspond with physicians regarding patient care, including consultation requests via phone or in writing.
• Stay current with clinical management approaches through continuing education conferences.
• Provide peer review assessments for new physicians joining the department.
• Work in an environment treating highly acute patient populations.

Administration (20%)

• Serve on institutional and hospital committees, attending appropriate meetings.

Research (3%)

• Actively engage in clinical research and scholarly activities to enhance the department’s academic environment.

Education/Teaching (2%)

• Develop and deliver a balanced educational program in oncologic emergency medicine for fellows, residents, and students.
• Attend and participate in Division/Department teaching and continuing education conferences.

Requirements

• M.D. degree from an accredited medical school or equivalent.
• Completion of residency training in an approved American Residency Program or equivalent.
• Acceptance by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
• Licensed as a physician in the State of Texas.
• Board certification in Emergency Medicine.

Qualifications

• Five (5) years of experience as Assistant Professor or equivalent, or ten (10) years of post-clinical degree experience.
