Assistant Track and Field Coach- Director of Throwing Events

About the role

Viterbo is seeking a Throws Coach who will take ownership of the throws program, bring energy and consistency to practices, and build strong relationships with student-athletes. The successful candidate will combine technical coaching, thoughtful training, strength and conditioning, recruiting, organization, and mentorship to help our throwers reach their potential and contribute to the success of the overall Viterbo University track & field program. This is a part-time, seasonal position. Hours and days worked will vary depending on the time of year. Attendance at all games and practices is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive practice plans and training schedules for the throws group.
  • Provide event-specific instruction and technical development in the shot put, discus, and other throwing events as appropriate.
  • Assist the head coach with training sessions and coaching responsibilities at practices and during competitions.
  • Oversee the strength and conditioning component of training for throwers, including appropriate lifting, speed, power, mobility, and injury-prevention work.
  • Develop individualized training progressions that meet athletes at their respective skill and experience levels.
  • Coordinate weekly and seasonal training plans in alignment with the overall track & field program and competition schedule.
  • Monitor athlete progress and make adjustments to training based on individual needs, performance, and competition schedule.
  • Attend and actively coach at track meets, providing technical instruction, competition preparation, and support to student-athletes.
  • Assist with meet preparation, event entries, warm-ups, competition logistics, and other meet-related responsibilities.
  • Maintain accurate records of athlete performances and use those results to guide training and athlete development.
  • Assist the head coach in recruiting student-athletes to Viterbo University, including identifying prospective student-athletes, communicating with recruits, attending recruiting events, and supporting overall recruiting efforts.
  • Communicate regularly with student-athletes regarding expectations, training goals, performance, academic success, and areas for improvement.
  • Foster a positive, competitive, and team-oriented environment that emphasizes accountability, effort, sportsmanship, and personal growth.
  • Work collaboratively with the head coach and other members of the coaching staff to ensure consistency across the program.
  • Assist the head coach with administrative responsibilities, including travel planning, budgeting, fundraising, and other program-related tasks.
  • Promote student-athlete safety by emphasizing proper technique, appropriate training loads, recovery, and adherence to university and athletic department policies.
  • Serve as a positive role model and mentor for student-athletes and represent Viterbo University and the track & field program in a professional manner.
  • Complete other responsibilities as delegated or assigned by the head coach.

Qualifications

  • Previous coaching experience in track & field, particularly in the throwing events, preferred.
  • CPR/First Aid certification and any required coaching certifications are preferred or required as applicable.
  • Valid driver's license with satisfactory driving record.

Skills

  • Strong understanding of throwing mechanics and event-specific training.
  • Knowledge of strength and conditioning principles, particularly as they apply to developing power and explosiveness in throwers.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with student-athletes of varying ages, abilities, and experience levels.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a coaching staff.
  • Commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the track.
