Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach

About the role
The Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach is responsible for establishing and maintaining strength and conditioning programs for all sports, with the goals of improving athletic performance, reducing athletic injuries, and teaching lifelong fitness and movement skills. This role involves devising training plans based on sound scientific principles, supervising training sessions, evaluating athletes, maintaining records, and supervising work-study and internship students. The coach collaborates with sport coaches and the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach to determine athlete needs and consults with sports medicine or athletic training staff for injured athletes. The role also includes maintaining the strength and conditioning facility and establishing safety policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement strength training and conditioning programs in-season, off-season, and preseason for all school-sanctioned male and female athletic programs, reflecting research-driven practices and the Long-Term Athletic/Fitness Development Model.
- Work in cooperation with the sports medicine or athletic training staff in the rehabilitation and strengthening of injured athletes.
- Facilitate a collaborative relationship among sport coaches, sports medicine, and the strength and conditioning staff.
- Design and implement policies and procedures for the strength and conditioning program in accordance with the Strength and Conditioning Professional Standards Guidelines.
- Develop systems for tracking athlete attendance and progress in conjunction with sport coaches.
- Conduct an annual needs analysis for each sport team in collaboration with sport coaches and athletic trainers at the conclusion of each season.
- Annually conduct and review a departmental risk management plan.
- Complete an annual budgetary proposal for the program, including routine maintenance, equipment purchases, and staffing needs.
- Determine and reinforce expectations for athlete conduct that align with the school’s expectations.
- Maintain the strength and conditioning facility and ensure its safe and professional operation.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in the field.
- Current relevant professional certification credentialed by an independent accreditation agency (e.g., NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist® (CSCS®)).
- Current standard first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillation (AED) certifications.
- Strong working knowledge and teaching skills in analysis and techniques of strength training.
- Experience and/or expertise in strength and conditioning programming for collegiate populations.
- Strong motivational abilities.
- Proficiency in operating strength training equipment, AED, and sports aid equipment.
- Evidence of ability to interact positively with student athletes, colleagues, and the public.
- Strong organizational skills and effective oral and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions and current Strength and Conditioning Professional Standards and Guidelines.
