Assistant Program Coordinator Trainee - Martin Luther King, Jr. Black Student Resource Center

Temporary, full-time trainee position (1-year limited duration) with possibility for reclassification into the SSP IB classification for an additional 1-year appointment.

About the role

The Assistant Program Coordinator Trainee (APCT) is a trainee-level appointment working under the lead direction of the MLK Program Coordinator/Student Academic Success Counselor and with close supervision of the Director. During the trainee period, which is not to exceed 12 months, the APCT is expected to develop and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities to function under general supervision at the SSP IB working level.

The incumbent assists the Program Coordinator through clearly defined efforts to deliver integrated support services and programming aimed at improving students’ academic success, leadership, professional development, retention, and enrichment of the overall student experience. This position will serve as a mentor and advisor to students. In addition, the APCT will work with interns and student assistants to support staff who design and deliver programs for graduate and/or undergraduate students to promote and raise awareness around student excellence through events/programs, written materials, and representation on campus-wide committees.

Responsibilities

• Assist in delivering integrated support services and programming to improve students’ academic success, leadership, professional development, retention, and overall student experience.
• Serve as a mentor and advisor to students.
• Support interns and student assistants in designing and delivering programs for graduate and undergraduate students.
• Promote and raise awareness around student excellence through events, programs, written materials, and campus-wide committee representation.
• Gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations.
• Participate in and contribute to group meetings, conferences, and interviews.
• Clearly express ideas and recommendations orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
• Work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with advanced notice.

Requirements

• Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field. Specialized experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
• Working knowledge of the basic principles of individual and group behavior.
• Working knowledge of research and observation techniques for recording, classifying, and interpreting factual information.
• Working knowledge of the techniques and methods of interviewing.
• Ability to gather and analyze data; reason logically, draw valid conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations.
• Ability to participate in and contribute to group meetings, conferences, and interviews.
• Ability to clearly express ideas and recommendations orally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
• Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents.

• Ability to understand and navigate a dynamic campus culture with diverse populations.
• Competency in cross-cultural communication.

Pay

Anticipated hiring range: $4,150 per month (at the minimum of the classification salary range). CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,150 – $5,076 per month.

Schedule

Full-time, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., with occasional evenings and weekends dependent on department need.
